The Mount Tabor senior exploded onto the running scene during his junior year, and gives the credit squarely to his coaches.
If you didn't know about Ian Milder two years ago, then you certainly aren't alone. As a sophomore, he ran 17:42 for cross country, but then began to show signs of major improvement when he ran sub-10 for the 3200 in the spring of that school year. It was right about this time last year that he moved up to being a strong #2 for Mount Tabor, running sub-16 four times during the 2012 regular season. Then came his enormous breakthrough, a 15:18 at Foot Locker South, representing an improvement of 2:24 in just over a year's time! That was followed by a 4:17/9:13 compaign, and suddenly Ian was a candidate for top returning runner coming into the fall. Although he had a small injury to overcome in the middle of this season, he is back on track and ready to challenge the top guys in the state, with his eyes fixed first on the NCHSAA 4A championship meet and a return to Foot Locker South on the horizon. He has also formed some strong friendships with runners from around the state, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him. Pay particular attention to the amount of credit he gives to his coaches - that's the sign of a runner that is grounded and knows what got him to where he is now.
