KNIGHTDALE - Anyone driving to Knightdale will soon know it as a title town.
Town Hall has approved plans to erect two signs on the east and west ends of Knightdale Boulevard to showcase Knightdale High school's 2011 championships in indoor and outdoor track and field.

The signs will read:

"Welcome to Knightdale, home of the Knightdale High School Knights; 2011 Track and Field State Champions."

The sign will be placed within the next two months and will stay posted for three years, as per N.C. Department of Transportation regulations.

"This vote (to approve the championship sign) is one that you enjoy making," Councilman Mike Chalk said. "All those guys are good students, too, so it shows what kind of kids we've got ... and its important to recognize them."

The Knights won a state title in indoor track during the winter season, and followed up in May by winning the outdoor track state 4-A championship in Greensboro.

Burkheart Ellis Jr. also won an individual state championship in the 400 meter.

The state titles were the first in the new Knightdale High School's history.

"I'm overjoyed, speechless ... the success has been a long time coming," David Castell, Knightdale's track coach, said. "I think the championship brings a sense of pride to the community."

And Castell's team hasn't slowed down, adding to its trophy case last month. Knightdale in July won a national team championship at the New Balance Nationals.

"We should have a great shot at repeating in state's," Castell said. "We're looking to run the table again next year."
