GREENSBORO, N.C. – He already knew he won when he stepped in the circle for the last time. It became easier to fall in love with the moment, to get caught up in what already happened. So by the time Minisink Valley’s Alec Faldermeyer took his final attempt in the hammer throw, he had become a spectator.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trevor Dunbar made his move with just over two laps to go and no could have expected it would look quite the way it did. No one could have expected that the senior from Alaska’s Kodiak High would drop the curtain on the race, that he would bury everyone before the bell lap.

Distance phenom drops 29 year-old mark By Christopher Hunt photo by Tim Fulton/ArmoryTrack.com GREENSBORO, N.C. – It looked like he smiled. He said he didn’t. But he looked like he did. For a second, it seemed that he grinned at the gloriousness of the moment. It looked like somehow German Fernandez broke free of himself to enjoy history as he was making it. But it was the pain. It had already been a huge year for the quartet with a strong showing at the Penn Relays in April as well as AAA state championship in the relay three weeks ago, but their season just got a whole lot sweeter with their race at Nike Outdoor Nationals. Their 7:49.55 season best from their state win was not good enough to get them in the fast section at the national meet, but fast enough to get into the next to last section. They had plenty of company with worth teams ready to roll out swift times as at the bell, Albemarle anchor leg Anthony Kostelac found himself in a group of roughly a half dozen. Kostelac was able to break out of the pack on the backstretch, but Hudson High School of Ohio appeared to be pulling away with the victory. Kostelac was not ready to give in though as he had a monster finish for his last 50 meters to run down anchor leg with a 1:52.8 split and give Albemarle a first place finish and hopes of a possible national title steal from the slower section. However, Mumford of Michigan had other plans as they dominated the fast section with the fastest time of the meet at 7:37.99. Albemarle's final time of 7:42.21 still held for second place overall as their performance at Nike is the second fastest all-time in state history only behind a 2001 South Lakes squad which featured the likes of Alan Webb and Richard Smith. South Lakes ran a state record time of 7:35.33 at then adidas Outdoor Championships (same meet as Nike Outdoor Nationals), which saw Webb run a 1:47.3 split on anchor. Photo by Maroon News With no seniors among them in Garrett Bradley, Luke Noble, Garrett Bradley, and Zachary Zvhorvac, there is plenty of excitement towards next year among the Albemarle group to make a serious run at the state record held by the 2001 South Lakes squad. Just moments ago, Joe Franklin won the 800 meter title at Nike Outdoor in the last high school race of his career. The talented field took it out bunched up at a good pace of 25 seconds for the first 200, but then slowed down considerably to enter the bell lap in 54.5. Joe sat in the pack for the first 200 meters and then started to come wide to get into position. After 400 he was able to overtake the leaders and quickly opened up a huge gap with a surge of speed. Joe extended the gap into a chasm, but going into the last 100 meters it appeared that the pace was getting to him. Fighting hard and finally swirling his arms to keep his momentum and balance across the finish line, he held off a hard charging Charles Jock (CA) to finish with a time of 1:50.48. Congratulations to Joe at the conclusion of your high school career with a national championship! Good luck at Tennessee! Post-Race Interview | Race Video (Coming) | Photos (Coming)

Ashley Brasovan may not have won tonight, but her battle was impressive coming off of the 16:18 meet record less than 24 hours before. The Girls Seeded 2 Mile race was a sit and wait dramafest. You felt like at any moment someone was going to blow it out and space out the pack... it never happened. The super-talented field stayed bunched up for the ENTIRE race. Ashley found herself from very early on boxed in and stranded toward the back or middle of the pack. Since they never stringed out it made it tough for Ashley to get into any kind of position. She spent a lot of time in lane 2 and 3 trying to get around, which took even more out of her already tired legs. The double just wasn't meant to be. Neely Spence of Pennsylvania was the victor of the sit and wait, which was a pretty safe conclusion given her speed. Dentarious Locke was the top Florida placer of the night. After coming out of the prelims as the top seed (10.43), he took it all the way to the tape. In a photo finish, he was just outleaned by Hunter Furr of North Carolina 10.56 to 10.60 to finish in second place. David Howard of Spruce Creek concluded his high school career with a 14.15 in the 110 Hurdles finals for fourth place. We have a full list of all Florida finishers tonight's events. The first events of this year's Nike Outdoor Nationals go off tonight in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 5000 meters will start at 8PM EST. While Florida has no dogs in the fight in the boys race, three girls will be representing the Sunshine State on the girls side: Jessica Butler (St. Thomas Aquinas), Jana Stolting (Maclay), and Ashley Brasovan (Wellington). While there are a lot of excellent girls in this race, including Jessica Butler who is fresh off of a big PR road 5K last month of 17:54, let's face it Brasovan is in a league of her own in this race. It is hers to win. The national record in this event belongs to Caitlin Chock. By the end of the night it may very well belong to Ashley. The time of 15:52 seems extraordinary--and sure it's nothing to sneeze at--but let's remember Ashley has put down multiple 16:40 times over her career on the grass. If she's feeling up to it the meet record should be squarely in her grasp. One has to expect that if she is feeling good (and the pace is right) tonight she will go after it. Especially after having missed the state record attempts in the 3200 earlier this spring she's probably eager for a page in the record books here! If she is not feeling up to snuff or falls off record pace, I'd assume she will pull up and put on auto-pilot for the win to save for tomorrow. She is also entered in the two mile race at 7:45pm on Friday. That one should be a lot more competitive with girls like Kathy Kroeger (NY), Neely Spence (PA), and Emiliy Lipari (NY). LIVE VIDEO ON NOW!!!!
Photo by John Herzog Virginia's most dominant sprinter this past spring in Marlena Wesh of Landstown, will be focusing only on individual events at Nike Outdoor Nationals. Wesh, a Nike Indoor Nationals champion in the 200 meter dash, has been competing mainly in relay action at national level meets including two outstanding legs at Nike Indoor in the 4x100 and 4x400 which included a anchor leg in the 4x200 meter relay that gave the Virginia Beach school a national title over Eleanor Roosevelt. Wesh shined again in relay action at Penn Relays helping her team to strong showings in the Championships of America finals in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay including a state record breaking performance of 3:42.77 in the qualifying heat for their 4x400. The Landstown junior has simply obliterated the competition in Virginia every time she has stepped on the track this spring, but has not raced anything higher than 200 meters leading up to Nike Outdoor Nationals. She will be running in section two of five of the 400 meter dash on Saturday, which could be interesting to see if she could be a spoiler in the event and steal a national title from the slower section. Winning from a slow section is nothing new for Wesh as she pulled off the feat at the Virginia 3A state indoor meet. Meanwhile, the 200 meter dash seems to have opened up well for Wesh in Greensboro to repeat as a Nike champion in the event from Nike Indoor in Landover. She has the 19th fastest time in the nation for the 200 meter dash this spring at 23.81, but actually has the second fastest time among all entrants behind only Chalonda Goodman of Georgia as it appears some of the ladies ranked ahead of Wesh are either headed to compete for World Juniors spots this weekend at USATF.
The first day of Nike Outdoor Nationals is about to start a fabulous weekend of action. Tonight the only high school races were the boys and girls 5k runs. From start to finish the 5k races were quite interesting, but in opposite ways. Foot Locker champion Ashley Brasovan (FL) ran away from the girls field, running by herself after two laps, winning in 16:18.53, U.S. #6 all-time. On the boys side NIN 5k champion Solomon Haile (MD) continued his impressive streak of national appearances, winning the boys race in 14:38.23, tying the meet record. Haile showed his strength at the mile, jumping to the lead and slowly lowering the pace. His tractics worked perfectly and he took home another Nike Nationals title. Such great results signify great things ahead this weekend in Greensboro. 5K Race Videos by Brandon Miles: Girls 5K Section #1 - Girls 5K Section #2 (Seeded) - Boys 5K Section #1 - Boys 5K Section #2 (Seeded) Ashley Brasovan Interview w/ Announcer / Solomon Haile Interview
The two girls from Florida, Ashley Brasovan and Jessica Butler, won their respective heats tonight at the Nike Outdoor Nationals 5K. Butler won the first heat with nice closing speed to come from behind. Brasovan left no doubt in the 5K running all alone the entire race and basically lapping every girl in the field of the fast heat. She set a meet record of 16:18.53.
