Girls Preseason All-Classes Team Rankings

The top team might not be a big surprise, but there could be some unexpected appearances in places 16 - 25 in the rankings.

The list began with the returning 5000 rankings from the 2011 cross country season, and then modifications were made based on improvements during the spring track season, runners lost, and recent program history. Teams were divided into tiers based on their score in the returning rankings (given in bold within each team's box), then sorted within each tier.  In some cases, a team with many signs of improvement was moved up to a higher tier.  Bonus consideration was given to teams with tight packs (at least 3 of the top 5 within 30 seconds of each other) and front runners (under 16 minutes for boys, under 18:45 for girls).  Subscribers can view the statistics that were used in the rankings process:

1. Green Hope

If you have any questions about the current dominance of the Green Hope girls, here is the only answer you need: they graduated FOUR of their top 5 from last fall, and still easily top the preseason list.  With a score 160 points lower than anyone else, the Falcons will start the season on a different level than any other team.  Top returner Maura McDonnell showed signs of developing into a powerful front-runner toward the end of the season; the only thing hampering her development is that she plays for Green Hope's national power of a soccer team in the spring (but she still managed to turn out a 2:15.02 800).  Behind her is a pack of four runners with PR's that are only 10 seconds apart, and they will be very hard to break up.  The only sign of weakness among the returning Falcons is a gap of almost a minute between their 5th and 6th runners, so they will have to rely on depth cultivated over the summer.  The improvements of Emily Boesch (11:40 for 3200) and Kristen Lospino (11:53) during the outdoor season should really help.  This team likely won't outrank last year's squad when looking at the best girls' teams in North Carolina history, but they are a prohibitive favorite for their fourth consecutive 4A state championship.

Tier Two Teams: 265 - 314 points

2. Cardinal Gibbons

With two strong front-runners and five sub-20 runners returning, Cardinal Gibbons would be one of the top 5 teams in these rankings regardless of what happened during their spring season.  Then, Rachel Bartolomeo put up 5:15 and 11:08, while Mary Grace Doggett clocked in with 5:19 and 11:19.  In addition, the Crusaders had last year's #6, Krista Rosenquist, at 11:47 and Katie Magee at 12:04, while Samiiah Wilson posted a 5:21.  If Lauren Velasco (5:22 in the spring) runs cross country this fall, that could add yet another talent to the mix, and the word from Raleigh is that they have a rising 9th-grader who has the ability to run with their current top two.  That's a load of talent, coupled with a program that has a strong history and a powerful culture of effort.  Cardinal Gibbons could have one of the best teams in state history, and this girls' squad certainly has its eyes on repeating as 3A state champions; they only lost two runners, #3 and #7, from that title-winning squad.

3. T. C. Roberson

UPDATE: Lily Anderson, formerly at South Mecklenburg, has moved to T. C. Roberson, causing them to jump up in the rankings.

Today is a day for programs with a rich, deep history and strong #1 runners, and T.C. Roberson definitely fits the bill.  How's this for sustained success: the last time the Rams were NOT in the top 5 in their classification's state meet was 1995, a streak that includes an amazing 5 straight 3A championships.  This year will be a bit of a challenge, though, due to the loss of four of last year's top seven runners (numbers 3, 5, 6, and 7).  They do have front-runner Brooke Gordon for one more year, and she returns with the 7th-fastest time in the state.  In order to get into the top 5 of a loaded 4A girls meet this year, however, Roberson will need a strong summer and the development of their depth runners.  Anastasia Soule showed great improvement last year, running 12:11 during the winter and then clocking 5:24 in the spring season; Lauren Hartmann, last year's #9 runner, ran 5:38 and 12:10 during outdoor track.  In the end, the Rams may need an infusion of one or two talented newcomers to avoid the end of a 17-year streak.

4. Chapel Hill

If you have looked at the raw returning 5K rankings using 2011 times (link above), then you have seen that there is actually a three-way tie for second place, and Chapel Hill is one of those teams.  In order to try to split them for these rankings, I had to look at a lot of factors.  First, the measurables: the Tigers only lost their #7 runner from last fall's squad, and they had strong spring seasons from top runner Tristin Van Ord and depth runner Kathleen Cannon (12:21 for 3200).  They also return four sub-20 runners and a group of three solid candidates to improve toward that mark this fall, plus Van Ord is a strong front-runner.  Then, there are the intangibles: a reputation for one of the strongest summer programs in the state, a culture of hard work and success, and arguably the richest tradition in this sport of any North Carolina school.  Cross country is the featured season for Chapel Hill runners, and that type of approach helps them develop as well as (or better than) any other team over the summer.  One other unmeasurable characteristic commonly associated with Chapel Hill: they have a knack for finding talented freshmen, and even one this fall could put the Tigers over the top and into the 3A championship.

  Chapel Hill 305

  2) Emily Williams   19:03.00 37
  3) Camille Gossett   19:21.00 54

  7) Kathleen Cannon   20:43.00 231

5. Carrboro

The girls' teams ranked 2nd -5th have virtually identical scores in the returning rankings, so we are left to use other measures to decipher where each team fits.  The Jaguars lost their 2nd and 7th runners from the 2011 team, and the loss of Frankie Perone will definitely hurt, but they have more than enough firepower to defend their NCHSAA 2A state title and push even the best 3A and 4A programs.  In addition to Grace Morken, who has the true #1-runner's mentality (always run to win), Carrboro had solid track seasons from rising sophs Helen Morken and Maysa Araba, and Camilla Dohlman (12:04 for 3200) showed signs of serious improvement.  The Jaguars return five runners under 20, but then there's a drop-off of over a minute to their returning 6th runner.  That means it's critical for them to develop depth in case of injury; if Rachel Burch can regain her 12:18 form from the 2011 outdoor season she could provide needed support for the top 5.  This is a program that seems to get a talented new runner just about every year, as well.  A good summer and a healthy season could move this Carrboro squad into the conversation about all-time best girls' cross country teams.

  Carrboro 314
  1) Grace Morken   18:38.00 12
  2) Helen Morken   19:07.00 42
  3) Maysa Araba   19:12.40 48
  4) Alexa Phillips   19:50.00 105

  7) Natasha Lopez   22:12.91 573

6. Myers Park

Myers Park has a load of returning talent on the girls' side, but one thing holds them back just a bit in these rankings: last fall, the Mustangs came out very slowly at the beginning of the season, which could indicate they didn't have a very good summer.  If that problem is fixed thi year, however, watch out: this team only lost their 5th and 6th runners from the squad that ended the 2011 season ranked 6th overall.  Sonja Payerpaj continued to develop in the spring season, running 11:49 for 3200, and Mary Prouty (5:36) and Madeline Frank (5:35/12:20) also showed solid improvement.  That could give the Mustangs as many as six runners under 20 minutes this fall, and if that happens they will be tough to beat.  If they have a weakness in that ideal scenario, it would be the lack of a true front-runner (given the strength at the top of the girls' 4A division); if your first runner is in 24th place, that puts you at a slight disadvantage in the scoring.  All that notwithstanding, the ceiling on this Myers Park team is very high, and they could find themselves in the top 3 overall by the end of the season.

  Myers Park 305

Tier 3 Teams: 392 - 416 points

7. Broughton

Few teams have the potential firepower up front that Broughton could bring this fall.  In addition to returning #1 runner Mattie Blue, the continued development of basketball player Megan Sullivan gives the Caps a 1-2 punch that will be hard to top.  The team did lose their 3rd and 5th runners from last fall's squad, but if runners like Ayla Gizlice (11:59 for 3200 this spring) and Allison Berger (5:31 for 1600) continue to develop, they should be able to fill in the gaps.  Keep an eye on Kristen Gardner, whose 12:30 in the 3200 indicates she might be ready to break 20 minutes this fall.  Broughton will need all of them to improve, because if this team has an achilles heel among its returners, it will be in the depth department.  This is the highest-ranked team that does not return at least four sub-20 runners, and that could cancel out the benefit of their top two if not corrected.

  Broughton 416
  1) Mattie Blue   18:42.00 15
  2) Megan Sullivan   18:46.10 20
  3) Kelsey Moore   19:22.00 56

  7) Lee Anna Mcmillan   20:50.00 255

8. Ardrey Kell

After finishing the 2011 fall season ranked second all-classes, Ardrey Kell took a big hit in terms of both talent and leadership when Kaitlyn Kramer and Abby Brooks graduated.  They still have a lot of firepower back up front, though, with the continued development of Sydney Foreman (10:43 and 5:06 during the spring) and the Teague twins, whose improvement through outdoor track season may have been somewhat overshadowed by the two big guns putting up huge times in front of them.  Who wouldn't want their 2 and 3 runners to clock 11:38 (Samantha) and 11:47 (Sydney) for 3200?  This fall's success won't depend on the front three; rather, it will be determined by the development of the 4-7 runners.  In that department, the Knights got strong track seasons from Aleisha Murrell and Mary Klemmons, and both have a good shot to break 20 this year.  The girls' competition in 4A is tough this year, but with a good summer Ardrey Kell can stay in the top 5 at the state meet.

  Ardrey Kell 397
  1) Sydney Foreman   17:50.00 3
  2) Samantha Teague   18:51.00 24
  3) Sydney Teague   19:03.00 38
  4) Aleisha Murrell   20:05.00 138
  5) Mary Klemons   20:29.00 193

  6) Toli Schiaretti   20:44.00 234
  7) Carly Murden   20:50.00 256

9. Providence

Providence was one of the youngest teams among the final top 25 last year: they only lost one top-seven runner (their 5th), and the only senior scorer this year is returning #7 runner Gina Daniel.  That means a three season buildup with five of their top seven runners, and as long as they don't get sick of each other that should make for a formidable team (inside info: using 2011 times, Providence projects as the #1 girls' team in 2013, although that could change drastically during the season).  Daniel had a great spring, dropping to 2:16.50 in the 800; if that translates to cross country and she pushes for a top 5 spot, that could push the Panthers toward the top 5.  Although Bianca Bishop seemed to struggle a bit during outdoor (relative to her sub-19 cross country time), expect to see her continued development as the team's top runner.  The only visible weakness last year for Providence, other than a lack of experience, was a fairly big gap between their second and third runners; if someone like Helen Griffith can close that gap after having a strong spring season, this squad will be tough to beat.

  Providence 392
  1) Bianca Bishop   18:53.00 27
  2) Grace Sullivan   19:07.00 43
  3) Scotti Cool   19:39.00 82

  7) Gina Daniel   20:39.00 217

Tier 4 Teams: 586 - 724 points

10. Pinecrest

Word out of Southern Pines is that they have a very nice group of freshman girls; however, this ranking is based on returning runners, and the Patriots look good there, having lost only their #5 from last year's team.  #1 gun Jennie Cunningham recently had surgery to repair a septum/sinus issue that had affected her breathing (and therefore her training) since January, so if she is fully recovered it could mean a step forward for her.  This is a squad returning four sub-20 runners, and improvement during the spring by runners like Sarah Pressley (12:06 for 3200) and Zia Matti (12:37) will only bolster their strength.  Unlike some of the other teams around them in the rankings, the Pincrest girls look to be extremely deep this fall and could easily overcome an injury anwhere from 2-5.  This is shaping up to be a banner year for girls' cross country in our state, but if the Patriots can put it all together they have top-5 potential.

  Pinecrest 586
  1) Jennie Cunningham   18:42.00 16
  2) Katie Hayes   19:41.00 89
  3) Jaleigh Jensen   19:52.00 112

  7) Mulloy Manning   20:54.00 272

11. East Chapel Hill

If you only looked at the results from 20122, you would wonder why they get such a high ranking; they finished the season at 34 and only rank 21st in the returning rankings.  Once you remember that they ran the whole 2011 season without Nina Pande, however, you can understand why the Wildcats are on the verge of the top 10 overall.  Pande ran 19:15 in 2010, and she ran 5:18 and 11:44 this spring on her road back to full form.  Pair her with the emergence of Pegah Kamrani in the 2011-2012 school year (5:08 and 11:09 during outdoor track), and you have a very strong 1-2 punch developing.  Depth is definitely a concern, however; East Chapel Hill will need a fifth runner who can close on the 20-minute mark, and even if they find that an injury to any of their top 5 could disrupt a potentially surprising season unless some young runners develop over the summer to fill in the gaps.  If they stay healthy, however, this is a Wildcat team with the firepower up front to threaten for a top-5 spot in the 4A state meet.

  East Chapel Hill 624
  1) Pegah Kamrani   18:43.00 19
  2) Sara Owre   20:04.00 135

  7) Jessica Nolting   25:05.00 1199

12. Mount Tabor

Although the 2011 season might have been a bit below the standard of some of Tabor's past girls teams, and definitely flew under the radar compared to their boys last fall, if you looked closely you could see a young team quietly improving and gaining experience.  That should pay off this fall, with only one top-7 runner (their #3) having graduated.  The emergence of Kayla Montgomery as a legit #1 runner, starting in the fall and progressing through her 11:15 spring 3200 PR, should set the tone for a positive step for the whole team.  Kataryna O'Neil and Rhiannon Farney also showed strong improvement in the spring, bolstering the Spartan's depth.  This is a group of girls that is one strong summer away from breaking into the top 10 in the state this fall, especially if they can add a solid freshman or two (as is often the case for this consistently strong program).

  7) Katherine Leak   21:30.00 398

13. West Carteret

This is a program on the rise, and they should be able to overcome the loss of their #3 and #7 runners from last year.  Everything starts with top gun Blake Dodge, the 3A state champion last fall and one of the best 800 runners in the state.  The addition of Katie Cease last year (she moved in from out of state) paid immediate dividends, and she improved steadily during indoor and outdoor.  It's very hard to evaluate the progress of the rest of the team, however, as they have no results from spring track.  If this group has a good summer, there is a possiblity they could put 5 girls under 20 minutes, which only four teams in the state have returning.  On the other hand, depth could be a concern, as their returning 6 and 7 are both over 21.  The Patriots will be a bit of a mystery until the summer ends and we get to see them race, and they have the talent to be in the top 10 overall by season's end.

  West Carteret 630

14. Charlotte Catholic

A promising 2011 cross country season was almost derailed before it started, as Charlotte Catholic lost one of their top runners after she moved to Raleigh.  Despite that and a bit of a slow start, the Cougars rallied to finish 12th in the final All-Classes Team Rankings last fall, and they return 6 of their top 7 runners from that squad.  Although losing Jamie Vezolles will hurt, the improvements of Margot Corcoran (5:19.88 for 1600) and Emma Moore (5:39) during the spring season could make up for it, possibly giving the Cougars a solid 1-2 up front.  The lack of a low point-scorer up front hurt them in the postseason last year, but if Corcoran can improve to the mid-18's that weakness will be cured.  If they can get their 4-5-6 girls to bunch up tighter and close on #3, they will be strong again this year.

15. Charlotte Latin

After graduation losses in 2011 that could have been devastating, Charlotte Latin proved that their girls' program can last: they finished second in the NCISAA 3A state meet, losing by only one point in their quest for a fifth consecutive team title.  This year's losses (#4 and #7 graduated) are much easier to absorb, and the returning team could be eager to return to the top of the podium this fall.  Led by the nearly-even 1-2 punch of Tricia Murphy and Laura Gill, the Hawks also had a solid spring, with their top 5 milers ranking 13th in the state with an average of 5:45.  Katie McDowell, in particular, showed that she is ready to join her two fastest teammates, running 5:36 and 12:15 (best 3200 on the team).  If Addy Collette joins the team this fall, that could bolster their depth substantially; that could be critical, as lack of depth is definitely this team's weakness.  If they stay healthy, though, Charlotte Latin is the early favorite for the NCISAA 3A title.
