Frosh/Soph Invitational: Part of the NCRunners Elite Series

The Frosh/Soph Invitational...

The UNOFFICIAL JV State Championship

Saturday, April 28 at Mount Tabor High School

The idea of a meet for freshmen and sophomores may not have originated in the Winston-Salem area, but it certainly has deep roots there.  At one time, secondary schools in Forsyth County were divided into three grade levels: Junior High (7th and 8th graders), High (9th and 10th graders), and Senior High (11th and 12th graders).  During that time, there was a separate local championship held for the high schools, and therefore only for freshmen and sophomores.  That division of schools ended in 1984, but a few years later coach Richard Gizinski of East Forsyth decided to hold a late-season meet for athletes that did not qualify for the regionals.  The next year, coaches Scott Brent (North Forsyth) and Norman Trzaskoma (R. J. Reynolds) took over the meet, and they decided to bring back the 9/10 meet.  Held at Reynolds until the early 2000's, the freshman/sophomore meet was moved to North Forsyth and then expanded to out of county teams, becoming the Frosh/Soph Invitational in the process.

Over the years, the meet has provided a great end to the season for athletes that do not qualify for the traditional postseason.  After being unable to host the meet last year, I am proud to bring it back in 2012 as a part of the NCRunners Elite series of meets.  This Saturday, along with the Elite events that have been previously advertised (see below), 9th- and 10th-grade competitors will square off again, looking for a last PR and a potential springboard to greater performances next school year.
