One of the best trends in our sport over the past few years has been the increase in the number of athletes, coaches, and teams that turn their efforts toward charitable giving. There are now several meets, in fact, which are at least partially dedicated to raising contributions for worthy causes. I think these need to be highlighted just as much as the outstanding performances of the athletes, so please send me information related to these kinds of service events when they occur.
The Norman Trzaskoma Invitational has an accompanying canned food drive, with the proceeds donated to a local food bank. This year, the teams contributed enough food and money to provide almost 3,400 meals to needy families around the Triad. For the second straight year, Mount Tabor was the leading contributor, which earned them a trophy (accepted by three of their seniors in the picture below). Thank you to all the athletes and parents that participated in the food drive, as it comes at a time of critical need. It's important for all of us to realize that there are bigger things going on in this world than competitions between schools, and that sport can draw people together in powerful ways to solve problems.
