Ruiz shows flash of speed

RALEIGH, NC -- If there was one obvious weakness of Jamestown senior Bryce Ruiz, heading into his last season of high school track season, it was his leg speed. While possessing tremendous endurance and strength to help him become one of the state\'s best distance runners, his lack of a finishing kick has cost him wins or higher placings in many big races against the state\'s best. That looks to change this season. He showed signs of this change in the second heat of the two mile run at the Nike Indoor Classic where he outkicked former Foot Locker All-American Joe Thorne of Georgia to win the heat in a time of 9:17.

He kicked off his outdoor track season likewise as at the Raleigh Relays, in front of his future college coaches and teammates at N.C. State, Ruiz split a 1:57 leg on the Jamestown 4x800 meter relay, which took second in the race with a time of 8:15.43.

Jamestown also brought along their girls\' 4x800 squad, who show lots of promise as a very young group, as they won their race in a time of 10:05.91.

Coincidentally, the city of Williamsburg\'s other high school, Lafayette, also made the trip down to Raleigh to compete and also performed extremely well. After his breakthrough day at the Group AA State Indoor Track, jumper Sintell Crew is only continuing that momentum into outdoors as he won the triple jump and took second in the long jump with marks of 44-08.50 and 21-11 respectively.
