Boys 100
J Johnson (Panther Creek) and Brandon Ray (Athens Drive) will square off in what should certainly be the fastest time in the state so far this season. They'll have some stiff competition on their hands with William Hoffman(Green Hope), Rondell Terry (Garner), Van Gupton (Rolesville), Kobe Barnes (Wakefield) and many more. Both Johnson and Ray have posted very fast hand held 100 times over the last week and we could be in for the NCHSAA 4A State Meet preview tomorrow.
Girls 100
Kylia Wright (Southeast Raleigh) ended her indoor season with a bang running a surprising NC#3 All-Time indoor 55m dash of 6.93 at the indoor state championships. She holds the best PR in the field of 11.83. She will face off with Melicia Monzzon (Heritage), Erin Johnson (Enloe), Jonah Ross (Garner) and Taylor Scott (Wakefield) where we should see multiple girls under 12 seconds. Monzzon ran 11.94 as a freshman and ran 7.21 this indoor season. Johnson has been running very well this outdoor season and is yet to lose in a 100 so far. It's certainly going to be a tough final to make!
Girls 4x100, 4x200, 4x400
Be prepared for Southeast Raleigh girls to show off in these events tomorrow and they look to be head and shoulders above the rest of the county. Even if they don't run their top girls they might be able to sweep the relays tomorrow.
Boys 1600
Kyle Fawzi (Panther Creek), Alec Atteberry (Apex Friendship), Nathan Gamble (Leesville Road) and Wesley Provost (Apex Friendship) enter as the top seeds as all have broken 4:30 this outdoor season. But we have a pair of 800 runners in Matthew Kehn (Green Hope) and Christian Pigues (Rolesville) that are looking to test their wheels in unfamiliar territory. Neither have broken 4:30, but they're more than capable of that based off their 800 PRs. Atteberry has shown massive improvement lately going from a 4:40s guy to running 4:28.49 for the full Mile. Fawzi will be strong as usually up front, but will have plenty of guys nipping at his heals with a county title on the line. We could see as many as 14 boys under 4:30 in this one!
Girls 400
8 girls enter with PRs under 60 seconds in what should be a scorching fast final section that'll include Kyna Robinson (Southeast Raleigh), Cheyenne Jones (Fuquay-Varina), Talyer Grier (Wakefield) and Jessica Dixon (Broughton). Robinson was 2nd at the indoor state championships in the 500 and the sophomore will come in as the favorite. Jones consistently ran in the 56s last year ending the season with a PR of 55.60, the best amongst this field. This field has multiple girls that will be gunning for an NC#1 mark, held by Maya Singletary (Hoke), of 55.50.
Boys 400
Freshman Brian Williams (Southeast Raleigh) enters as the top seed at 50.27 and will look to upset a field full of upperclassmen. 5 others enter under have PRs under 51 seconds in Jalen Herring (Middle Creek), Kayin Fails (Cary), Anthony Tripp (Wakefield), Randolph Ross (Garner) and Gabriel Montague (Enloe). Will the freshman run away with what could be the first of many Wake County titles?
Girls 800
Alessandra Rodriguez (Green Hope) is back after some missed time in the indoor season and is running at her best ever after a Mile PR last week. She comes in as the fastest seed at 2:17.30. She will be challenged by Timara Chapman (Leesville Road), Emily Jordan (Green Hope), Josie McGee (Apex) and Tabitha Riddle (Apex). Erin Spreen (Wake Forest) will be doubling back from the 1600 as well.
Boys 800
Andrew Brooks (Broughton) and Ian Delgado (Green Hope) are the top two returners in the 800 and will be joined by 4 others that have dipped under 2 before. Kyle Fawzi (Panther Creek), Ares Epps (Green Hope), James Lundergan (Cary) and Trevor Kirkland (MIddle Creek). Brooks has been running well and just snagged a Mile PR of 4:18 at Raleigh Relays last week. Epps will be one to keep and eye on as has ran a big 1600 PR of 4:23 and was splitting 1:57 on 4x8s this indoor season. Delgado and Brooks will look to battle it out up front, but their is plenty of talent in this field to score an upset.
Girls 200
Freshman Jonah Ross (Garner) is stronger in the 200 than she is the 100 and enters as the top seed at 24.59. But their are plenty of strong girls in this field that will be looking for a Wake County title tomorrow. Taylor Scott (Wakefield), Erin Johnson (Enloe), Kylia Wright (Southeast Raleigh) and Cheyenne Jones (Fuquay-Varina) all are not far off Ross' PR. Will the NC#1 mark of 24.19 set by Alysia Johnson hold from this strong field?
Boys 200
Same field as the boys 100 meters, that will have many boys under 22 seconds. William Hoffmann (Green Hope) just clocked a hand-held 21.64 yesterday, his first time under 22 seconds. He will look to challenge J Johnson (Panther Creek) who got him in the indoor 300. Johnson holds the fastest outdoor PR of 21.68 from a year ago, but if you paid attention indoors you'll know Johnson is a much better runner since then. Johnson was an All-American indoors in this event... and ran a 21.53...indoors. Look for the winner of this race to be the new state leader in this event. Brandon Ray did run a hand-held 22.14 without blocks last week at a tri meet, and will be looking to break 22 for the first time tomorrow.
Girls 100mH and 300mH
This looks to be two versions of the Sierra Fletcher show. The Southeast Raleigh hurdler comes in with the fastest seed times in both events, and might have a challenge in the 100mH in Azari'el Goodwin (Oanther Creek) and Olivia Goodwin (Cary). The 300mH is her best event and she comes in with a PR 2 seconds faster than the field at 43.55. She should sweep the hurdles if she takes the time to get out of her sweats.
Boys 3200
The distance runners Lanier Derbyshire (Broughton) and Nathan Gamble (Leesville Road) will look to hold off 1600m specialist Finn McBride (Green Hope), Stuart Holmes (Broughton) and Luke Gostling (Millbrook). Gostling and McBride both grabbed mile PRs last week at Raleigh Relays and will be looking to do the same in the 3200 tomorrow. Gamble ran 9:21.65 last week at Raleigh Relays grabbing the Leesville school record in the process. Also look out for freshman Tim Haughton (Apex Friendship) who has run 9:53. Though he might be out of contention to win it, he's certainly going to be a force in Wake County over the next three years.
