XC Preview: NCHSAA 4A by Region

Girls 4A Mideast Region

Teams to Watch

Green Hope's depth of talent will once again set them apart from the rest of the region and state. Their 2014 times put all scorers in the region's top 10, and with a strong tradition of making great strides from year to year, Green Hope's ladies could finish even further above current expectations. Leesville Road will also draw eyes with front-runner Nevada Mareno set to show great improvement, as well as their second and third runners who could also place themselves in the top 10 after coming off of a strong 2015 track season.

Athletes to Watch

All eyes will be on senior Elly Henes (Green Hope) and junior Nevada Mareno (Leesville Road) as they run atop the regional and state levels. Henes' time puts her far ahead of the next competitor, but if she can perfect the art of pushing herself alone up front she could potentially break the 17-minute barrier. Mareno hasn't yet run sub-18, but her smoldering track times and indoor national title in the mile beg to say that you can expect a major performance from this girl. Kayla Holder of Wake Forest will also draw attention after running below 18 minutes in 2014 and a pattern of significant year-to-year progression in the longer distances.
