XC Preview: NCHSAA 4A by Region

Boys 4A East Region

Teams to Watch

Despite the loss of the top 2 runners in last year's regional race, South View still has enough talent back to rank first coming into the season. It's closer than it has been in some past years, though, especially if Pinecrest is able to develop some more depth to help recover from their own graduation losses. New Hanover had strong team 1600 results during the spring, and that could be a sign that they're getting into the competition for the 3rd and 4th spots in the state meet to come out of the 4A East. If so, they will be battling Hoggard and Ashley, as well as potentially Pine Forest (although a coaching change could shake things up there).

Athletes to Watch

Cape Fear's Paul Arredondo is the top returner from the regional championship, although Javier Alejandro (South View) had a faster time during the regular season. Using top 5K times it looks like there are as many as 6 other runners that could contend, but at the regional meet itself there was a huge gap from those two back to the next returner. Robinson Snider (Hoggard) might be able to bridge that gap after a spring season that saw him rank second in the region in the 3200. Likewise for Jackson Sullivan (Jack Britt), who trailed only Alejandro in the 1600 on the track.
