Teams to Watch
Weddington returns 4 runners in the top ten, and all 4 should be under the 16 minute mark this season; it'll take a lot to take down this group in 3A this year as they hope to regain their XC State title from 2013. Jesse Carson and North Lincoln return similar squads and look to be the only two teams contending for second and third. But you can't count out Marvin Ridge, despite losing many key runners to graduation. The Cuthbertson program has also really come on strong the last few years. Both of these programs are just a few runners away from contending for a top team spot in this region.
Athletes to Watch
This is the top region for individual athletes for 3A, with the top 3 returners in the classification all found here. Mitchell Resor (Weddington), Alex Cornwell (Hickory Ridge), and Zach Marchinko (Carson) will battle it out many times this season, as they did last year. Marchinko will have to go down as the man to beat as he got the best of the three at the 2014 XC State Meet, finishing second (Resor was third and Cornwell fifth). But another guy who is equally as capable is Matt Conner (Weddington), who won the 3A 3200 State title last spring. Conner has always been a beast on the track, but hasn't always put it together in XC. This 4-man battle will be one to watch as the fall season progresses. Austin Hilburn (N. Lincoln), Alex Hazan (Weddington), and Colton Jordan (Weddington) will be contenders in a second pack of runners. Hilburn had a great overall year last and has a lot more potential as he gets more experience.
