Teams to Watch
West Carteret has ruled this region for a while now, and the Patriots return the best 5K team from the 2014 season. Swansboro is always tough, and they appear to have a solid claim to second place coming into the season. If you look at track results, though, a different pattern emerges. Northern Nash grades out as the deepest team in the returning 1600 and 3200, and Corinth Holders also had some strong track results. This race may be closer than the rankings below indicate - but never discount a program with a strong summer training culture, and that's why West Carteret still gets the nod as the regional favorite.
Athletes to Watch
West Carteret's depth might be a bit of a question, but their #1 gun is a known quantity. Emme Fisher is one of the top runners in the state, regardless of classification, and she has 30 seconds on her top challenger for the regional title, Haley Schaeffer (Jacksonville). Schaeffer had the best 1600 times in the region, but Fisher led the 3200 rankings from spring season; that makes it look even more like a 2-girl race this fall. If anyone else gets into the mix for the individual title, it would be Paige Horvath (Swansboro), who finished 2nd at the regional meet as a freshman last fall. Also, keep an eye on Cameron Rutherford (Corinth Holders) and Gwyn Reece (Smithfield Selma); the latter made a big step forward in track season.
