XC Preview: NCHSAA 1A By Region

Girls 1A Midwest Region

Teams to Watch

The girls from Bishop McGuinness had won two straight state championships before CSD took the title away in 2014, and now the Villains have their hands full in their own region. Graduation has taken a toll - although McGuinness still has a strong front 5 back from cross country, depth is a concern and in the spring they only had 3 returners run the 1600. Gray Stone Day, on the other hand, returns 6 of 7 from their team last year, and that puts them slightly ahead at this point (but not by enough to be definitive).

Athletes to Watch

Talk about a mixed-up region: Lauren Deview (North Moore) has the best returning time, and Annie Habeeb (Gray Stone Day) has had the best career of anyone in the Midwest 1A...but 9th-grader Hannah Cranford (South Davidson) beat both of them at the regional meet. Then another rising sophomore, Mount Airy's Jo Snow, had the best 1600 time in the region for the spring season. The only thing that's certain right now is that this is shaping up to be a real barn-burner of an individual race!
