XC Preview: NCHSAA 1A By Region

Girls 1A East Region

Teams to Watch

The database says Camden is the favorite, with Lejeune and Pamlico in striking range but trailing coming into the season. That's based on returning cross country times, though; if you look at results from the spring, the race may be closer than it first appears. Lejeune had a strong group of milers during track season, including a few new runners and some returners that showed significant improvement. A close battle wouldn't be surprising: the two teams were separated by only one point at last year's regional, finishing 2nd and 3rd behind champion Okracoke (who lost 2 seniors from their 5-runner roster from 2014, and will have to develop some depth to be able to defend).

Athletes to Watch

Freshman Kathleen Burroughs (Granville Central) won the region last year, edging out Michaela Tiffany (Camden). Ocracoke's Karen Perez was only a few seconds behind, and she had the best times in the region for the 800 and 1600 this past spring (Tiffany led the 3200 list). Judging by those results, expect another exciting 3-girl battle this fall - unless one of Lejeune's new discoveries in the spring can make an impact and get in the mix.
