Superstar hurdler Anna Cockrell was joined in Edmonton by three rising sophomores at UNC, and all 4 came home with a medal.
The Pan-American Junior Championships took place in Canada last weekend, and athletes from our state were very successful when it comes to medals. North Carolina's lone high school participant, Anna Cockrell, made the most of her trip to Edmonton, dominating the 400 Hurdles with a time of 57.10. Cockrell won by 2 full seconds over an international field of under-20 athletes, which included some college freshmen.
UNC had two of its rising sophomores return with silver medals and a third with bronze, though none of the three is a home-grown NC product. Kenny Selmon, finished 2nd in the 400 Hurdles, running 50.29, and Hannah Christen earned her silver in the 3000 Steeplechase by clocking 10:24.62. Caroline Alcorta brought home a 3rd-place finish in the 5000 with her time of 16:48.48.
Former Southeast Raleigh hurdler Jacklyn Howell (Kentucky) finished 6th in the 100 Meter Hurdles, running 14.04.
