With Warm Weather, NC Finally Makes a National Impact: NCHSAA 4A State Meet Recap

Girls Sprints & Hurdles Highlights

  • Ebony Williams (Parkland) won the 100 Hurdles with a late surge, clocking 13.44 NC #1 US #2 among wind-legal performances. The time was also a wind-legal All-Time State Record! Williams only got past Gabriele Cunningham over the final hurdle, as the Mallard Creek senior got a great start and posted a huge PR of 13.51 NC #2 US #5 NC #4 All-Time.
  • In similar fashion, Parkland teammate Katlin Sherman rallied for the win in the 100 Dash in a wind-aided time of 11.53 NC #1 US #15 NC #3 All-Time (all-conditions). Tamara Clark (High Point Central) ran 11.55 NC #2 US #16 NC #5 All-Time, and Sydnei Murphy (Apex) clocked 11.61 NC #2 US #24 NC #9 All-Time.
  • Clark returned the favor in the 200, closing out strong while running a wind-aided 23.69 NC #1 US #16 NC #6 All-Time (all-conditions).
  • Williams wasn't satisfied with the high hurdles win, as she battled her own rhythm through the 300 Hurdles and still ran a PR of 42.19 NC #1 US #15 NC #5 All-Time. She was challenged down the final stretch by Lakeisha Warner (Cary), who ran 42.51 NC #2 NC #6 All-Time.
  • McKinley McNeill rounded out the near-sweep by the Parkland Mustangs by taking the 400 Dash in 54.31 NC #1 US #16 NC #5 All-Time. Layla White (Cary) finished 2nd in 54.61 NC #2 US #22.
  • Cunningham also powered Mallard Creek to the win in the 4x100, as she gave the Mavericks the lead with a big second leg. Mallard Creek ran 46.69 NC #1 US #25 NC #4 All-Time while holding off Parkland's 46.85.
  • Parkland did win their signature relay, the 4x200, in 1:36.43. Cary's girls ran 1:38.09 NC #2 US #12 while finishing a strong second. The Mustangs also claimed the 4x400 on a come-from-behind anchor by McNeill, running 3:46.57 NC #1 US #15 NC #2 All-Time. Southeast Raleigh led much of the race and ended with a school record time of 3:47.49 NC #2 US #24 NC #3 All-Time.
  • Ninth-grader Cara King (Apex) dominated the Wheelchair 100 and 200, both NC #1 marks. She will almost certainly be a threat to the overall state meet records set by Jill Moore in 2011.
