J. J. Knox Invitational Preview

The Burlington-area meet has quietly become a solid place for good distance races (perhaps because the weather has been cool on this weekend the last two years).

Events to Watch

  • Boys 110 Hurdles: What more could you want, besides Marcus Krah vs. Emmanuel Jackson in this race? Well, warmer temperatures, yes, but still, this is going to be a great race. We could also see McKinly Brown's first sub-15 race here.
  • Boys 200: Brian Sessoms (Carver) comes in with the best PR, as the only guy in the field to have gone sub-22 in his career, but this early in the season he might not be in top form. Jeremiah Brown (Southwest Guilford) will give him a run for his money, and there are several guys with low-to-mid 22 hand times that are looking to prove they are legit. That should make for an entertaining final section.
  • Boys High Jump: There are 3 competitors with lifetime bests of 6' 4" - Tremelle Parker (Hillside), Dylan Wood (Eastern Alamance), and Dallas Coble (Asheboro) - plus 3 more at 6' 2". That means the win is up for grabs!
  • Girls 400: There aren't any state-wide stars in the race, but there ARE 5 girls with verified times within 1 second of each other, and that should make the final section exciting to watch. Jessica Wright (Hillside) has the best PR and also the best time so far this season, while Aaliyah Burton (Grimsley) and Ebony Nelson (Pinecrest) have been under 59 this spring. 2 others have PR's in the low 59's, if they are fit enough to run that now.
  • Girls Distance Races: The 800 will be a duel between Mason Kepley (High Point Central), who has returned after a rough junior campaign to run 2:18 already this spring, and Anna Passannante (Chapel Hill), who ran 2:13 in June but had a bit of a quiet winter season. The girl with the top current time in the 1600 is actually Carmen Davis (Southwest Guilford), at 5:28. If you look at indoor times, though, you find Katherine Dokholyan (Chapel Hill) at 5:20; there are also several girls in the race that ran under 5:20 last spring, including Bridgette Sullivan (Panther Creek) and Cierra DellaRova (Enloe). Samantha Schreiber (Patriot Pacers, VA) is in the 1600, and she also ran 11:15 for 3200 indoors, which makes her the top seed there. Marija Crook (Chapel Hill), Sarah Bodmer (Cary Academy), and Taylor Delaney (South View) are all legitimate challengers to her, in what could turn out to be the best overall race of the three.
  • Girls Long Jump: Jenele Terry (Page) has a 19-foot jump on her resume, but there's a slight problem - outside of Page home meets, she has never jumped more than 18 feet. If she can break that streak, she will still have to get past the Cummings duo of Kenyae Majors and Kayla Moore, not to mention Nidonna Nicholson (Ben L. Smith), if she wants to win. There are 11 girls entered with verified marks of 17 feet or better at some point in their career, so this looks like the deepest event of the day.

Athletes to Watch

  • Brian Sessoms (Carver): In addition to being the favorite in the competitive 200, Sessoms has by far the best FAT PR in the 100 field; if he's in shape, he could dominate there.
  • McKinley Brown (Hillside): His 39.03 in the 300 Hurdles is NC #1 right now, and he'll get the chance to defend it against Jackson, who has never broken 40.
  • Jeremiah Brown (Southeast Guilford): He will also be in the 200, but his best event might be the 400, where he should be able to pull away from the rest of the entrants.
  • Philip Hall (South View): After running the 1600 in the cold in Raleigh on Friday night, Hall is signed up for an 800 here on Saturday.
  • Iyin Battle (East Chapel Hill): The state leader in the discus (and top 10 in the shot put), he is in a class by himself among the throwers at this meet.
  • Marcus Krah (Hillside): On top of his showdown with Jackson in the high hurdles, Krah will try to put up solid long and triple jump marks, which will be a little tough in the forecast temperatures.
  • Imani Chapman (Sanderson): Late last spring and into the summer, she seemed to be on the verge of breaking through to national prominence, but the breakthrough hasn't come yet. The potential is still there, though. She is the top seed in the 100 Hurdles and the 200 Dash in this meet.
  • Alex Council (Northwood): She has the top time in the 100 by a bunch, and she is capable of winning that interesting 200, as well.
