West Carteret’s Emme Fisher set out on a mission to push the pace early. A quick first mile put separation between her and her competitors, though Haley Schaeffer (Jacksonville) was valiantly keeping Fisher within reach. A constant pressure allowed Fisher to continue to extend her lead until it was clear that she would remain unchallenged for the remainder of the race. Paige Horvath (Swansboro) was in third and was slowly reeling in Shaeffer over the latter stages of the 5k, but the gap to Shaeffer would prove to be too much to make up .
