The Cary senior may not like the spotlight off the course, but he is running with confidence once the race starts.

With his performance at the Seahawk Invitational last weekend, Dean Abushouk catapulted himself into the conversation about the top runners in the state.  He's really just carrying on a family tradition, though, as Bakri led the state two years ago, Mohamed ran 15:12 in 2009, and Assir made the state meet in his final high school cross country season (2008).  The Abushouk boys share one other thing in common: they are all very modest and even somewhat shy, preferring to stay out of the spotlight.  Dean was able to shed some light on where the running bug originated in his family, and also shows a deep streak of confidence in his running ability that shines through his quiet demeanor.  You can tell that he believes he will achieve his goals; then again, he is running on a road that was paved by his family members, and if they can do it, why can't he?
