Senior Spotlight: Hunter Welborn

The Starmount senior has been one of the state's most consistent performers, with three high jump titles so far.

I first noticed Hunter Welborn when she finished second in the 2011 NCHSAA 2A state meet, defeating several veteran jumpers while losing only to a state meet record of 5' 7" by Cheyenne Miller.  Since then, she has been one of the most consistent high jumpers in the state, winning the 2A title the last two years with 5' 6" jumps.  She matched that while winning a 1A/2A championship during her first indoor season this year, and I have seen her make some very good attempts at 5' 8" over the years.  Recently she has added the triple jump to her repertoire, and she's getting pretty good at that, too.  When you watch her compete, you're struck by how quiet she is, as she keeps to herself throughout the event; though she was nervous for this interview, I suspect that she is simply focused during competition.  Athleticism clearly runs in her blood - her older sister also ran track, and cousin Samantha recently signed to throw for Appalachian State.  I'm confident that we will see Hunter's first 5' 8" jump this spring, and with Starmount's move down to the 1A classification this year she has an excellent chance for her fourth title.
