Senior Spotlight: Callie Wynn

The West Davidson senior has improved by leaps and bounds over the next year, and she isn't done yet.

How can one race change the whole course of a runner's career?  If you look at the stats for Callie Wynn, you will see one time that stands out from all the others.  It came at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, during which she had already established herself as a premier runner by posting PR's of 18:57 and 11:12.  She had stalled out a bit in the spring, though, only improving by a few seconds in the mile and two-mile.  Then, at New Balance Outdoor Nationals, the breakthrough arrived in the form of an 18:05 for 5000 meters.  Just like that, Callie began to reset all of her expectations, and she and her coaches adjusted her training accordingly.  And so, you get a runner who enters her senior year expecting to run sub-19 right out of the gates, which is as fast as her best time from last fall.  She expresses a little disappointment in this interview about not running quite that fast, as she missed her cross country 5K PR by about 7 seconds, but that just serves to further illustrate the point.  And by the way, two weeks after this interview, Callie got her sub-19 time at Beeson Park.  When she comes back again for the state meet, she'll be in contention for the individual title.
