Girls Highlights

  • Zariyah Moss (Newton-Conover, right) was the busiest girl in the stadium on Saturday, and she made the most of it.  Moss started her day by winning the long jump with a solid mark of 17' 3", then proceeded to win the 100 (12.69) and the 200 (26.15).  In an unusual combination of events, she was also entered in the 800, but she dropped out of that race.
  • Maddie Lowe (Northwest Cabarrus) also had an impressive day, which started with her running away from everyone in the 1600 for an impressive solo 5:17.84.  Lowe then emerged from a competitive 800 with a late kick to win in 2:22.63.
  • India McWhorter (Alexander Central) dominated the throws, posting a 38' 1" shot put and then a 114' 11" discus throw.
  • Elizabeth Easter (South Iredell) won both of the hurdle races, running 15.58 for the 100 and then 48.16 in the 300.
  • Hickory's girls won the 4x100 (50.66) and the 4x200 (1:49.63).

Boys Highlights

  • The best single performance of the day belonged to Cameron Stinson, who ripped off a 10.67 in the 100 dash to take over the state lead (NCRunners considers only FAT times for all-classes rankings).  Stinson then went on to take gold in the long jump, tying for the top mark in the state with his 22' 10" jump, but he did not run the 200 later in the day.
  • Donte Dorsey (Shelby) was a double winner, taking the triple jump with a 43' 0" mark and then winning the 300 Hurdles in 42.40.
  • Tanis Baldwin (East Henderson) became the 33rd (!) North Carolina boy to run under 9:50 this spring, posting a solid 9:49.91.
  • Kevin Alanis (Alexander Central) became the 8th North Carolina boy to crack the 150-foot barrier in the discus, throwing 150' 6".
