KYtrackXC.com March 29th Athletes of the Week Jonathan Grooms Mar 30, 2009

In an effort to honor the top track and field performers from Kentucky, KYtrackXC.com will have a weekly set of Athletes of the Week.  There will be Middle School, High School, and College awardees.  Former Kentucky High School Track and Field athletes currently running in college are eligible for the College award, even if he or she attends a school out-of-state.

The New Bern (NC) boys completed a big weekend of relay performances against collegiate competition at the Raleigh Relays turning in swift times in the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays on Saturday. Despite botching a few handoffs, the New Bern boys (competing as Track Eastern) clocked a US #2 time of 1:25.20 (3rd overall) in the 4x200 and came back later to improve the US #1 time by five seconds in 3:12.82 (9th overall).

Raleigh Relays: New Bern USR 3:19.58 SMR! MileSplit Staff Mar 27, 2009

Running against collegiate competition at the NC State hosted Raleigh Relays on Friday evening, the New Bern boys of North Carolina (competing as club Track Eastern) broke the US high school national record in the sprint medley relay with a second place finish in the fast section in a time of 3:19.58. New Bern was pulled along to the national record by event winners St. Augustine (3:19.48). It was an incredible 7 second improvement from their US leading indoor best of 3:26.28 from the Simplot Games. The relay order and unofficial splits: Fuquwan Greene (200-20.9), Miles Sparks (200-21.9), Anthony Hendrix (400-46.5), & Andrew Hendrix (800-1:49). The Raleigh Relays also has high school 3200 meter races on Friday as Samantha George of Millbrook (NC) won the girls 3200 leading 6 under 11:10 with her 10:56.76. George is only a ninth grader and won the freshmen mile at Nike Indoor Nationals two weeks ago in Boston. Winner of the boys race was Chapel Hill's Taylor Gilland as he defeated Foot Locker 3rd place finisher Thomas Porter of Mountain View VA (9:14) in a final time of 9:11.

The Raleigh Relays at NC State University this weekend is typcially one of the most competitive college meets on the east coast. This year will be year number 2 of the HS 3200 meter run. This year's race looks to feature some of VA and NC's best. Check out the heat sheets: Boys | Girls Also, New Bern is set to take on some of the nation's best collegiate teams in 4 relays. Friday night: Sprint Medley Relay - going for the National Record, Saturday: 4x100, 4x200, & the 4x400
