A national high school mile record was the highlight of the 1977 state meets. Julie Shea ran 4:43.1 at the girls state meet in Raeford, and also won the 880 in 2:16.6.
Richmond County's boys, led by 100/220 winner Derius Covington and coached by Charlie Bishop, set new state meet records in the 880-yard and Mile Relays on their way to a state team championship.
