1972 was the first year that the NCHSAA held a girls championship in track and field.

The boys meet was held as an all-classification meet, after four years of being divided into separate 3-A/4-A and 2-A/1-A events.

Charlotte Myers Park, coached by Richard Prince, won two events and had athletes to score in five other events to win its third consecutive team championship, and 11th title in a 15-year span.

Three new state meet records were set:
6-8 1/4 - Chandler Muse, Charlotte Myers Park (old record: 6-7 3/4, Robert McAdoo, Greensboro Smith 1969)
14-2 - David Turner, Raleigh Broughton (old record: 14-0 3/4, Jesse Ratliff, High Point Andrews 1971)
4:14.2 - Tom Ward, Chapel Hill (old record: 4:15.2, Jim Wilkins, Roxboro HS 1970)

Charles Romes (Durham Hillside) won a noteworthy triple: 13.6, 19.2, and 21.9.
