Myers Park's four-year reign as state champions was ended by R.J. Reynolds High School. Reynolds was led by Reid Warren who set a new meet record in the 120 yard High Hurdles (14.8), tied the Low Hurdles record of 19.8, placed second in the 100 and third in the Long Jump. Warren's 14.8 took a tenth off the old record set in 1942 by London and Helsinki Olympic Decathlon medalist Chunk Simmons of Charlotte Central, and tied in 1956 by Lou Glascock of Greensboro.
Warren's 19.8 tied the record set by Myers Park's Rich Harris in 1960.
Jacksonville junior Dave Dunaway tied the 100y and 220y records and placed third in the High Jump. Dunaway's 10.1 tied the meet record first set in 1926 and held by six others. His 21.6 tied the record set by Myers Park's Bill Houston in 1958. He scored all 14 of his team's points to give Jacksonville second behind Reynolds.
Rodney Stewart of Burlington broke the shot put record with a heave of 53-8 7/8, betting the record set the previous year by another Burlington thrower, Reggie Loy (53-8 1/2). Stewart also won the discus (149-6).
Sophomore Carroll Maxwell of Hendersonville won the first of his three consecutive state titles in the 440 yard dash.
1962 was the last year that the state meet had only one relay event.
