Charlotte Myers Park won their fifth straight championship, edging Raleigh by 23 1/2 to 23. It was the closest winning margin in the 46 years that the meet had been held.
Five state meet records were broken.
Jacksonville's Gregory Steele added 6" to the Long Jump record. Tom Clark (Greensboro Senior) cleared 6-2 1/4 to break the record 6-0 1/2 set the previous year by Durham's Bill Croom. Rocky Soderburg (Charlotte Garinger) ran 4:23 to take two seconds off the mile record. Bob Jamieson (Greensboro Senior) broke the meet discus record with a throw of 153-3. The old record was 150-10 3/8.
