6 Races For The History Books; 1A/2A/3A In-Depth Recaps Jennie Hodge Nov 15, 2014

Crisp grass and windy conditions greeted competitors at the VHSL 1A, 2A, 3A races today.  Many fans, officials, and coaches sported winter layers and quite a few athletes raced in tights, compression sleeves, hats, and/or gloves. It was an exciting day of repeat champions on the individual and team sides.  There were 5 harriers toeing the line to defend their 2013 titles: Julia Wood and Cliff Conley of 1A, Brad Swiney of 2A, and Bonnie Angermeier and Andrew Hunter of 3A.  On the team side 1A Radford Girls and Galax Boys, 2A Maggie Walker Girls and Boys, and 3A US #1 Blacksburg  Girls and Lafayette Boys all hoped to make podium climbs.

The winds of southwest Virginia settled down in the afternoon yesterday to welcome 12 teams and 30 individual qualifiers to the 3A West Regional Championship meet. Spectators and athletes who’ve experienced Blacksburg’s notoriuos blustery conditions before were grateful for the balmy, calmer weather.  In combination with the softer ground conditions, the setup seemed ripe for memorable individual and team performances.

Clouds, cool temperatures, and relentless wind welcomed 20 schools from central and southwestern Virginia to the Blacksburg Invite. New school construction, that concluded in 2013, erased the existing cross country course so this Invite represented only the second 5k competition held on its demanding, hilly trails. Competitors at early October’s Metro Conference meet characterized the course as both scenic and challenging.
