Great Outdoor Provision Co. Featured Meet of Week 14

Sydney Foreman narrowly missed breaking 11 minutes last year; if she returns, will she get past that barrier this time?

Great Outdoor Provision Co. presents the Featured Meet of Week 14:

Charger Post-Season Tune-Up

(Saturday, Providence Day School, Charlotte)

The Meet

Arguably the oldest of the Foot Locker South tune-up meets, this one dates back to at least 2006.  Like others of its kind, the purpose is to get in a fast two miles, a sort of sharpening workout in preparation for the lightning-fast first two miles at McAlpine the next weekend.  In addition, some athletes use these tune-ups as a season-ending event, giving them one more race to put up a big time while still at or near peak fitness from the end of cross country season.  The goal is to put together a competitive field of athletes that will push each other to faster times, thus simulating some of the speed and crowding that athletes will experience when they go to Foot Locker South.  This meet has been particularly good at recruiting top-flight girls, having had someone run under 11:05 each of the last two years.

The "Course"

Providence Day has a brand new, 8-lane track for this year's event, which will allow for larger heats (and therefore less heats).  The Compton Track is part of the school's new Overcash Stadium, and it will be great to get an early look at the whole complex.  The new surface should be very fast, and the meet provides an opportunity to set the records for the brand-new facility.
