Boys 2 Mile Championship

Statement: Edward Cheserek had been roughed up the past couple of races, after fading both in the Dream Mile and the earlier 1600m anchor leg.  He put any speculation of his fatigue to rest, as his strong kick secured him the win.  He ran boxed in for a majority of the race, but found an opening as Thomas Awad cleared a hole for him with 400m to go.  He kicked around Thomas Graham of homestate North Carolina, and created a 25 meter gap in the homestretch to win.

Girls 2 Mile Championship

Statement: For the first half of the race, Haley Pierce of Tatnall blasted away at the front of the pack.  Her early pace proved fruitful in her mile leg in the DMR at Penn, but here Pierce was surrounded with talent ready to respond.  The field began to seperate, with a significant lead pack of 6 ready to kick.  Dana Giordano took over leadership in the penultimate laps of the race, but Wesley Frazier, who came in 3rd the night before in the girls 5000m, kicked ahead of everyone to win in a commanding performance.  She'll be bac tomorrow for the mile, mirroring her entries from last year's stellar perforances.

Boys 4x800m Championship

Statement: When 7:42 wins the slower section, you know spectators are in for a race in the seeded section.  NXN Champs CBA of Lincroft did not dissappoint, as they resoundly took the lead by the second leg, and never let go.  The field began to gain as they entered the last leg, but senior George Kelly pulled away from main rival Westfield of VA.

Girls 4x800m Championship

Statement: It seemed that this year, the girls' 4x800 was all about the Jersey Girls, as it became clear early in the race that several NJ teams stood out from the crowd.  The main race dominator seemed to be Ridgewood, who was challenged by both Runners High TC and Lenape, but maintained their lead pretty reliably.

Girls Mile Racewalk

Statement:  Maria Gorecki was top seed coming into the race, but Indoor State runner-up and NBIN Bronze medalist Annica Penn was not about to let the seeds dictate the race.  Penn took out strong, and never let go of her lead, even when Gorcecki made late race surges for the lead.

Boys 1600m SMR

Statement: Coming in, all eyes were on Zavon Watkins and Edward Cheserek.  The duo had met before as anchors for their respective SMR's at NBIN, where St. Benedict's got the best of Liverpool.  From what occurred, it seems as if neither were the medal threats, as both teams relied heavily on their anchor legs.  Despite Watkins having the fastest 800m split in 1:48.05, Union Catholic was the most balanced team out there, anchored for the win by 800m specialist Allen Eke.

Girls 1600m SMR

Statement: The top seeds for the race went in looking for an 8:50 performance.  However, after the split was right around 4:40, everyone knew it was becoming more out of reach.  Nick Ryan turned on the afterburners to cruise a finishing mile of 4:26 to win, pulling two Division 2 athletes to the line with him.  An impressive double for the junior.

Boys 4x200 Championship

Statement: The race was tight, as the heats were racing for time.  Velocity Striders set a very strong mark to beat from the slow heat, as the seeds may not have been as accurate as desired.  VS would eventually finish 2nd overall, as Knightdale blew down the backstretch, to win the seeded heat of the event.

Field Event Wrapup

Joe Velez of Providence launched one into the Stratosphere for the Boys Hammer Champs, hitting 207'03"

Mike Shuey of Johnsonburg almost matched the distances reached in the hammer, after his fling of the Javelin went 194'-05"

The girls were not to be undone in the throwing events, as they took to the discus, with Lauren Lubarski of Hermitage tossing it 147'01"

Back to the boys, the shot was thrown a very respecatable 61'07" from another Hermitage athlete, Matthew Bell.

Heading to the pits, Jeremiah Greene of Tampa lit up the stands with his incredible 50'11" jump in the Boys Triple Jump Champs

The girls were equally as impressive at the Triple Jump, as Carla Forbes of Hyde Park went 42-9.5
