Senior Spotlight: Francesca Evans

The senior from Hugh M. Cummings High School carries on a proud tradition of success in the triple jump and hurdles.

When you think of the triple jump in North Carolina, if you know anything at all about the history of the event in North Carolina, you think of two schools: North Rowan and Cummings.  Cummings girls occupy 7 of the top 25 spots in state history indoors, exactly the same number as the North Rowan boys.  Francesca Evans is just the latest in a long string of elite jumpers from that tradition, which also extends to top-flight hurdlers.  Francesca was the Girls MVP of the 1A-2A-3A Indoor State Championship, and her abillity extends beyond jumps and hurdles (she was 2nd in the 500 at that meet).  It might seem like the idea of living up to that kind of legacy would creat a lot of pressure, but instead there seems to be a lot of positive support behind all the athletes in the program.  In talking to Francesca, you can tell that she works very hard and that she is justifiably proud of her success, which includes playing a part in three indoor state and two outdoor team championships during her four years.  As she continues to move toward the magical 40-foot mark in the triple (and climb up the all-time list), you can tell that she exemplifies the character of Cummings athletics: she succeeds because of the kind of person she is, like those who went before her.  All of us would love to be part of such a program!
