The Charlotte Latin girls should be a force to be reckoned with in North Carolina this year. Without a doubt, they will be the top team in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and they could very well rival Green Hope as the best girls team in the state. On paper they look good, especially with the improvement of Laura Gill during last year's track season. Also, they have
So, behind them is a young team from Ravenscroft led by Foot Locker finalist, Wesley Frazier. Ravenscroft should be very good this year as well since they return most of their team from last year, including their top 2 runners who finished 1 & 3 in the state meet last year. With no seniors (by the rankings) in their top 6, look for this team to one of the best in the state over the next couple years.
Providence Day has finished runner-up to Latin the last couple years, but will have a lot of work to do in order to catch Ravenscroft. Led by 10th grade, Amanda McFeeley, who placed 12th at last year's state meet. Forsyth Country Day will also be looking for a top-3 finish at the state meet, but they may need to find a bit more depth.

The individual title lies in the hands of Wesley Frazier, the extremely talented rising 10th grader from Ravenscroft. Wesley racked up enough accolades last year as a 9th grader to feel like she has had an accomplished career. She has 
In most years of the NCISAA, Haylee Dawe of Charlotte Latin would be winning state titles. She has personal bests of 18:27, 11:20, and 5:18. She is looking to break 18:00 this year and has been very dedicated this summer in the hopes of doing so. Haylee is a very consistent runner who should get the nod for #2 in the state.
Rising 8th grader, Eliza Dekker of Durham Academy spent last XC season getting used to the 5k XC distance. She placed 5th overall at the state meet and should finish higher this coming season. Eliza didn't run varsity track for DA last year but spent her time blowing other girls out of the water on the JV team. Rumor has it she clocked a 5:06 1600m during the track season. Could she battle Haylee Dawe for 2nd? Yes. Could she battle Wesley Frazier? Possibly, as she does seem to have extroadinary talent.

The boy's team title may be up for grabs this year as there should be 3 schools good enough to win. The top returning team is Durham Academy and rightfully so as they return Fred and Carl Ward. They have also won the last 2 state titles and would obviously love to add to the streak. The Ward brothers will look to try and challenge Thomas Graham for that number one spot at the state meet but it hasn't been easy the last 2 years. However, between the two of them they have only totalled 11 points in the last 2 years of state meets (2nd & 3rd; 2nd & 4th).
Both Cary Academy and Providence Day should be much improved and both have the potential to challenge Durham Academy for the top spot. First, Cary Academy . . . they are led by Thomas Graham who has won the last two state titles, as a 9th & 10th grader. Then, they should have a very good sophomore in Colin Godwin who placed 3rd in the 3200m at the state track meet. Colin is much better than his 17:21 you see in the rankings. Coach Hall has a way of peaking his athletes at the right time and I don't expect things to change this coming season.
Providence Day is led by Reed Payne and Jacob Dordick. These two improved drastically last year and both made the All-State team, finishing 7th and 8th respectively. The talent is there for the Chargers to have a couple more athletes join these two near the front of pack, but only time will tell. With a quick glance at the rankings, depth appears to be on PD's side.
Other teams to keep an eye on: North Raleigh Christian (plenty of talent!), Charlotte Country Day (even with the loss of #1 Scott Foy to Asheville School), & Cannon School (looking for 3 to go with their top 2).

It is easy to tag Thomas Graham as the favorite among the boys. As I said earlier, he has won 2 state XC titles already and is only going to be a junior. Thomas ran 15:06 at last years Foot Locker South Regional and returns as one of the favorites to qualify for nationals this upcoming season. So you better beleive he has that goal in his head. He holds personal bests of 15:06, 9:17, and 4:16.
The Ward brothers will be up there and it is not completely out of the realm of possibility for them to challenge for the top spot. Carl has a 1600m best of 4:18, while Fred has a 3200m PR of 9:26. I hope we get to see two completely healthy brothers this XC season.
Cannon's Tim Gruber had a rought track season, but he has already begun to bounce back this summer. He proved during the 2009 XC season that he can be a force and he will be once again. He was the CISAA champ and finished 4th overall at the state meet. Scott Foy, now of Asheville School, has the potential to do great things if he's healthy. He has run 15:51 on the track, but hasn't been consistent over the last couple years during XC. We'll see if his new home in the mountains can turn that around.
Honestly, there are so many names to talk about here it is unbelievable. A finish in the top-11, All-State, this year should be considered quite an accomplishment. Here are a few to consider: Reed Payne, Providence Day; Ben Fiedler, Asheville School; Drew Thompson, Wesleyan Christian; Chase Shermer, North Raleigh Christian; Andrew Powell, Cannon . . . and on and on and on.
I, for one, can't wait for the season to start for the NCISAA 3A boys.
