Junior Emily Webb finished third in the 10,000-meter to pace the High Point University women's track & field team on the first day of the Big South Championship on Thursday in Charleston, S.C. It was Webb's first 10,000-meter race on the track.

“In the 10,000 it was the debut for Emily and Brittany Killough, and I thought they both competed very well,” said HPU head coach Mike Esposito. “They have been making some nice progress. It was a big PR (personal record) for Monica Delizo in the 10K. I think we have good momentum going into the second day of the meet.”

The top four runners were together in the 10,000-meter until the last mile, when Liberty's Ashley Osborne pulled away to win in 37:49.76. Webb dueled with runner-up Carey Phillips of Winthrop, who took second in 38:08.60, just ahead of Webb's 38:12.55.

HPU junior Brittany Killough fought to a sixth-place finish in the 10,000-meter, coming in at 38:57.10. Sophomore Monica Delizo placed 10th in a career-best 39:45.51.

Also on Thursday, senior Amber Donnelly placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 120-10. Freshman Lynee Pina placed 12th in the same event. Sophomore Gabrielle Barnes competed in the first four events of the heptathlon and sits in seventh place going into Friday's events.

“I'm very pleased with the way Gabrielle Barnes has competed in the heptathlon,” said Esposito. “She has herself in position to score. It was nice to have Amber Donnelly back throwing to get eighth in the javelin one year removed from arm surgery.”

Sophomore Manika Gamble is the top seed in the 400-meter hurdles and ranks second in the 100-meter hurdles and will compete in the trials of both events on Friday. Sophomore Christina Fenske is the top-ranked high jumper and will compete in that event on Friday as well.

The meet resumes on Friday at 11 a.m. at Charleston Southern's Bagwell-Settle Track.
