Manika Gamble of the High Point University women's track & field team set an HPU record and Big South record in the 400-meter hurdles at the Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday. Gamble ran a time of 58.56 to finish 10th in a national-class field.
"That was one of the better fields that you'll see all year, several of the women Manika was competing against will run in the NCAA Championship," said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. "Manika competed very well and she closed very well. It was a significant step for her, and that's why we sent her to Florida. We're really pleased with how she ran against that level of competition."
Gamble's 58.56 downed her own 400-meter hurdles record of 59.66 set at last year's HPU VertKlasse meet. At the Wake Forest Open on March 20, Gamble set the HPU record of 13.96 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Her time of 58.56 also set the Big South record, taking down the mark of 58.62 by Radford's Maurika Quarles in 2005.
At last year's Big South Championship, Gamble won the 400-meter hurdles and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Gamble was the only Panther competing at the Pepsi Florida Relays. HPU also sent competitors to the Duke Invitational and N.C. A&T Aggie Relays.
