Distance Runners Lead the Way for the Wildcats at Charlotte 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The distance runners led the way for the Davidson Wildcats, as freshman Natalie Atabek, junior Heather Conarroe and junior Lauren Childs ran personal bests and finished in the top five in the 5,000 meters, Saturday at the Charlotte 49er Classic.

Atabek was Davidson's top finisher in the event, placing third with a personal-best time of 17:42.49. She was followed immediately by teammates Connaroe and Childs, who finished with under-18 times of 17:43.06 and 17:47.97, respectively.

"Natalie, Heather and Lauren ran unbelievable!" head coach Jen Straub said. "All three went under 18 minutes and in personal best times, so I'm extremely pleased with our performance!"

Davidson also had a pair of top-30 finishers in the 1500 meters in junior Sarah Cline (21st, 4:54.72) and sophomore Jane Gay (28th, 4:58.39).

Freshman Rosie Lewis finished 12th of 56 competitors in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.45. She also competed in the 200 meters, finishing 43rd with a time of 26.93. Classmates Shelby Waggenseller (59th, 13.68) and Jena Manilla (59th, 1:09.01)were the Wildcats' top finishers in the 100 meters and 400 meters, respectively.

Davidson will return to action next weekend, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Winthrop Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
