SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson senior Tom Divinnie was voted the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Month for January after breaking three Davidson distance records.
A native of Brentwood, Tenn., Divinnie broke two school records at the Liberty Open. He won the 5K with a time of 14 minutes, 44.59 seconds on the first day of competition, and his time of 4:16.30 in the mile on Saturday also took first place. Both times were personal bests, and his 5K effort leads the conference.
Divinnie broke Davidson's 3000-meter run record in the Wildcats' season-opening event Saturday, Jan. 23, the Kent Taylor UNC Classic. Divinnie won the event in 8:24.47, surpassing Alex Hoyt's mark of 8.35.14 and Dan Gibson's oversize track mark of 8:25.7. That time also is a conference leader.
The Wildcats will return to action Friday when they compete in the Gene Anderson UNC Invitational for their final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Championships.
