The junior boys international mile at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix may have featured the first head-to-head matchup between two sub-four-minute prep milers in a high school-only field, but it was a talent on the high school looking in that stole the show on Saturday.
Rocky Hansen, the star senior out of Christ School (NC), took to the TRACK at New Balance as the fourth-fastest miler on the start list with a PR of 4:00.76, but that didn't stop him from going for the win. Hansen took home the elusive win against American and international competitors just north of four minutes with a final time of 4:01.11.
Hansen took out 3:58 miler Connor Burns, who finished second in 4:03.08, and 3:59 racer Simeon Birnbaum, who took third in 4:05.29. Fellow American distance greats Aaron Sahlman, Kole Mathison and Devan Kipyego rounded out the top six to complete a U.S. sweep of the top places in the event.
It was Hansen, Burns and Birnbaum jockeying in the front for the majority of the race, but a 59-second final 400m from Hansen sealed the deal as he pulled ahead for the win in a new nation-leading mark for the 2023 indoor season.
4:01.11 for Hansen makes for a new North Carolina indoor state record, smashing the previous all-time mark of 4:07.34 from current Porter Ridge senior Jacob Laney.
Fans were treated to a similarly exciting race on the girls side as Ventura (CA) sophomore sensation Sadie Engelhardt took to the indoor track for the second time this season and came away with the win in 4:40.59 in tight finish with Olney Richland County's (IL) Tatum David.
David crossed the finish just tenths of a second behind Engelhardt in 4:40.86, and junior talent Ellie Shea representing Emerging Elites (MA) took a close third in 4:42.08.
Engelhardt's winning time currently puts her at US No. 2 on the 2023 indoor mile leaderboard, only behind Sophia Gorriaran's 4:37.54.
It was a three-girl race between Engelhardt, David and Shea from the gun, but it was Engelhardt who mustered her way to a win as she crossed the line.
New Balance Nationals Outdoor 800m champion Isabel Conde De Frankenberg clocked 4:50.12 for fourth place in her 2023 indoor debut to contribute to round out the top American racers.
The junior boys and girls international miles were the two prep races in an otherwise professional invitational event at the new indoor facility on New Balance's campus in Boston.
