Men's Indoor Track Amongst App State's Cut Programs

Appalachian State University Athletics announced today that it was cutting three men's sports, Indoor Track & Field, Soccer and Tennis.

They will still support Men's and Women's Cross Country, Women's Indoor Track & Field and Men's & Women's Outdoor Track & Field.

App State is the third DI school in recent weeks to eliminate a men's track and field or cross country program, as previously Mid-American conference members Akron and Central Michigan cut cross country and track and field, respectively, earlier this month.

"After careful and thoughtful review, we determined that we could no longer sustain 20 program offerings in a fiscally responsible manner," Doug Gillin, Appalachian State's Director of Athletics said in a statement.

The school says that scholarships will remain for impacted athletes.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, these cuts come as the school seeks to reduce its budget by $5 million for 2021.

The school, which is part of the Sun Belt Conference, will continue to sponsor outdoor track and field and cross country.
