What To Watch From The NCHSAA 3A State Championships

Can Kyle Durham Sweep The 1600m and 800m? Can He Break 1:50?

Kyle Durham (Weddington) is the defending 800m State Champion after winning in 1:54.63 a year ago. He'd take 4th in the 1600m earlier in the day as well as anchor the winning 4x800m.  Durham comes in as the top seed in both events this year with seasons best of 4:16.97 and 1:51.65.  No one else has broke 4:20 outdoors this season in 3A, though Kyle Stamper (Cuthbertson), Hunter White (North Henderson) and teammates Will Mazur and Jackson O'Hara have been close.

The 800m has been his best event where he won last year and placed 2nd in a narrow defeat two years ago.  A battle with Kobe Brown (Southwest Guilford) gave both boys big PRs with Durham's 1:51.65 being a US No. 10 mark, while giving Brown a NC No. 3 mark of 1:53.59.  Brown took out the regional race hard, and will be fresh again this week as he looks to take the 800m win over Durham who will be on his third race of the day.
