Raleigh Relays Brings Four New State Leads

Boys 3200m

As the sun started to set in Raleigh, the gun went off for the final high school race of the Raleigh Relays. The entire field sat together through the whole first mile as Brian Picone (Cary) led the way through 1600m in 4:35. The entire twenty-one man field was within five seconds of the leader through that point. At the front of the lead pack was Zach Kinne (North Allegheny, PA), Lowell Hensgen (Cardinal Gibbons), Daniel O'Brien (Virginia Episcopal, VA), Ian Harrison (Panther Creek), and teammates Eldad Mulugeta and Obsaa Feda (Northwood). Over the final mile the Northwood teammates worked together and slowly made their way towards the very front of the race. At bell lap no one had made a strong move, but over the last 300 meters Mulugeta turned on the jets for what was a phenomenal 1:02 last lap to secure a statement win in 9:04.58 which is good for US #5! Mulugeta's teammate Obsaa Feda powered down the home stretch to hold off the rest of the field and take 2nd in 9:09.01. Chase Osborne (Western Branch, VA) was 3rd in 9:09.65, Ian Harrison was 4th in 9:09.88.
