What To Watch For At the NCHSAA 3A Indoor State Championships!

Girls Distance

Girls 1600

This event will set the tone for the rest of the day with a lot of star distance girls in 3A hoping to bring home a lot of team points, and a few state titles.  Elise Wright (T.C. Roberson) has to be the favorite coming in.  She got the better of this field with a big upset at XC States, and has run 5:00.71 this indoor season.  But Sarah LaTour (Cuthbertson) and Katherine Dokholyan (Chapel Hill) are both sub 5 minute milers and will be gunning to get some revenge on Wright.  Sarah Bechtel (Weddington) Anna Bristle (Parkwood) and Jenna Reiter (West Carteret) all have the potential to play spoiler in this one as well, each with PRs at 5:10 or under.  It'll be interesting to see how this takes off with most of the field doubling back in the 1000 or 3200 later in the day.

Girls 1000

Wright, LaTour, and Reiter will double back from the 1600 to battle again in the 1000.  Wright and LaTour should be the two favorites with PRs of 2:55 and 2:57 respectively.  Elyse Wood (Marvin Ridge), Katie Verrill (Piedmont) and freshman Elizabeth Starkie (Weddington) could be in for a big PR here if the put themselves in the mix with Wright and LaTour.  Wright is looking for a NBIN Championship 800 qualifier, so don't be surprised if she takes off from the gun in order to obtain a fast time.

Girls 3200

This race is very wide open with Sarah LaTour likely being on her 4th race of the day battling with a ton of 3A stars in Anna Bristle (Parkwood), Sarch Bechtel (Weddington), Frances Whitworth (Mt. Tabor), Jenna Reiter (West Carteret) and Jonna Strange (North Iredell).  LaTour won this event last season outdoors, and with her lethal kick to end a race we've seen over the last two years the rest of the field is going to need to try and run the kick out of her.  A lot of these girls are entered in other events, but I bet a few will scratch to focus on a 3200 title.  Cuthbertson will need a strong day from their three girls in Latour, Madeline Hill and Kaitlyn St. Hilaire in what should be a close team battle with Hillside.
