Connor Lane (Cardinal Gibbons) toed the line with the best distance runners in the nation including Brodey Hasty (TN), Noah Affolder (PA), and David Principe (RI). The pace was fast early as 5 boys broke off early on in the race splitting 32 seconds for the first 6 laps. Lane found himself at the end of the five man group. The group went through the Mile in 4:20, a very fast opening half as most fast 3200s on the high school level are usually negative split.
As the race went on Lane move up to 4th as one athlete fell off the blistering pace, even though it slowed slightly after the first mile. With about 4 laps to go Lane fell off of the pace up front but was still way under pace to set a PR and break 9 minutes.
Hasty outkicked Affolder for the win running 8:45.16. Lane held on for 4th going through the 3K in 8:17.01 and full 2 Mile at 8:53.59! He breaks Jake Hurysz Indoor 2 Mile State Record that was 9:02.29 from 2010. Lane also becomes the first North Carolina athlete to break 9 minutes indoors!
Watch Lane dominate the NCHSAA 4A Indoor 3200
Hurysz holds the outdoor 3200m State Record from Arcadia in 2010 as well where he won the event in 8:49.76, which I'm sure Lane will have his sights set on this outdoor season.
Lane will take the track again next week in a loaded 5000 at the Texas Distance Festival next weekend. Thomas Graham (Cary Academy) holds the state record in that event at 14.11.23.
Below is the updated All-Time 3200 Indoor List. Lane's conversion shakes up to be 8:50.50 for a 3200, the normal distance run in North Carolina.
