Sarah Bodmer (Cary Academy) took down a strong girls 1600 field and narrowly held off Natalie Tyner (Laney) and Calli Parlier (Apex). The previous record was held by G'Jasmyne Butler (Leesville Road) that was set last season as she ran a 5:13.20. Yesterday, Bodmer ran a 5:13.10 with Tyner just behind at 5:13.60 and Parlier at 5:14.10. Tyner and Parlier now sit 3rd and 4th all time at the in the meets history. This was the fastest 1600 field ever assembled at this meet as the top 6 times were inside the top 10 on the meet's all-time list and all were under 5:20!
Candice Whitley (Southeast Raleigh) shattered the discus meet record as she won the event by 28 feet with a mark of 138-0! The previous record was held by Apex's Brianna Heilsnis who threw 129-4 in 2013. Whitley's winning mark was also a PR by over 5 feet in her first meet throwing Discus of 2017! Whitley also took 2nd in the shot put to teammate Courtney Murph where Whitley threw 35-10.5. Whitley is the 2nd overall returner heading into 2017 and proved she will be challenging top returners Veronica Fraley (Wakefield) for the 4A Girls State Title in a few months.
No meet record is safe when Southeast Raleigh's running the relays are racing, and they left with 2 new meet records yesterday evening. Southeast Raleigh dominated both the 4x200 and 4x400 yesterday running 1:41.30 and 3:55.00. They wont he 4x200 by 6 seconds and the 4x400 by over 16 seconds as they were in a class of their own. After losing the indoor team battle to High Point Central a few weeks back I'm certain the Bulldogs are going to be out for revenge this outdoor season. The majority of their squad will head up to New York this weekend for New Balance Indoor Nationals to race at the Armory!
In the boys 1600 Laderique McNeill (Harnett Central) posted a 6 second PR running 4:26.00 placing him at NC#2 this outdoors season behind Finn McBride (Green Hope) who has run 4:24.20. McNeill won by 6 seconds over a strong field that held Wesley Provost (Apex Friendship), Devon Pratt (Terry Sanford) and Sam Thornton (Cardinal Gibbons) who made up the top 4 spots. We saw a big improvement out of McNeill this indoor season in both the 1600 and 3200 and he proved Saturday that he certainly isn't satisfied yet.
Three Freshman boys were under 4:50 in the 1600 as Tim Haughton (Apex Friendship) held off Scott Kennedy (Apex) and Joshua Carlson (Apex Friendship). Haughton's winning time was 4:43.80, just off his PR from indoor of 4:41.73.
