Key Events to Watch at Tomorrows Champion Fast Track Invitational

Performance List

We have a strong field slated to compete at the Champion Fast Track High School Invitational this weekend.  We've previewed some of the stronger fields for tomorrow below.  Be on the lookout for Jeff Sides tomorrow as he will be on site getting photo coverage of the event!

Girls 55m Dash

Cambrea Sturgis (AL Brown competing unattached) was defeated a few weeks back by the freshman sensation Jordan Sales (JH Rose) as both girls ran 7.08 that day.  Both girls will be ready for the rematch and will look to be the first girls under 7 seconds this season.

Boys 300m Dash

The sophomore Emerson Douds (Weddington) has made great strides since last outdoor season posting marks of 35.74 for 300 and a blazing 1:06.22 for 500 meters.  He will look to prove that he is a contender in both events for a 3A State Title this indoor season.  He will be joined by Eddy Sherman, (Cary Academy) who currently sits at NC#3, Lakeith Mobley (Rolesville) and Tyler Manigault (Unattached) in what should be a very competitive 300.

Girls 500m Dash

Gracie Whelan (Providence Day) will look to continue her strong indoor campaign tomorrow in the 500 and will go against Maya Singletary (Hoke County) who will look to make her invitational debut this season in the event.  Singleterry raced at a Polar bear once this season and clocked an impressive 1:18.2.  Whelan will look to break her 500 PR of 1:17.73.

Boys 1000

Michael Moerk (Mt. Tabor), Austin Carroll (Corinth Holders), Coleman Mitchell (Cary Academy), Evan Harris (Lake Norman) and Micah Pratt (Patriot Pacers, Virginia) will all go head to head in a 1000 where their is no clear favorite.  Mitchell excelled this cross country season and will look to test himself in the shorter distance where I'm sure he will be just as good. Moerk, Carroll and Harris have specialized in the middle distance events in the past and this race should be won in the lower 2:30s.

Girls 1600

Sarah Bechtel (Weddington) has proved to be very fit early on in the season running 3:04 for 1000 and 5:09 for 1600.  She will be challenged by Floridian Amanda Beach who holds a PR of 5:05 for 1600 as both girls look to close in on the 5 minute barrier.  Kate Eiselt (Myers Park) and Lindsey Lanier (Providence) will also contend for the win.

Boys 1600

Cameron Ponder (Mt. Tabor) will square off with Coleman Mitchell (Cary Academy) as both boys will make their indoor season debut. John Cacciatore (Florida) is making the trip North to compete and holds a 1600 PR of 4:26.  Evan Harris (Lake Norman) and Landon Maxwell (East Gaston) have had strong starts to their indoor seasons and will look to blast a fast mile time in a stacked field.  Ben Mitchell (FCDS) had a break out cross country season and will look to try and translate that onto the track in his indoor debut.

Boys 55m Hurdles

Conference foes Cedric McGriff (Providence) and Joshua Brockman (Ardrey Kell) will meet once again.  The two raced at the NCRunners Holiday Invitational where Brockman had the lead over the final hurdles, but McGriff was able to close hard on the sophomore.  They currently sit NC#1 and NC#2 in the event and will look to get under 7.4 seconds.

Girls 55m Hurdles

This field is stacked with most of North Carolina's best hurdlers including Kayla Moore (Cummings), Akira Rhodes (Mallard Creek) and Ashya Smith (Winston-Salem Prep).  They'll be joined by Imagine Patterson (South Carolina) in what should an an intense 55m Hurdles final as all girls should be closing in on the 8 seconds mark.

Boys Pole Vault

Jacob Hickerson the sophomore has improved by over 2 feet since last season jumping 14-0 earlier this season at Pole Vault Carolina.  He will look to climb the ladder this weekend and see how much higher he can go.  He will have stout competition in Justin Richard (Lake Norman) who has jumped 14-6.

Girls Long Jump

Whenever Cummings is scheduled to compete you know you're in for some strong Long Jump performances.  Kenyae Majors, Kayla Moore and Kelsia Moore have all been strong in the event this season as they'll see if they can go 1-2-3 in the meet.  Deja Reid (WS Prep) will look to break up this strong Cummings trio and has jumped 17-2.75.

Boys Shot Put

Austin Harrison (West Forsyth) has had a monstrous first stage of the indoor season throwing an NC#7 all-time mark of 58-.05.  This weekend he will look to climb the all-time list and move closer to throwing 60 feet.  The sophomore Chancellor Crawford (North Mecklenburg) is the only other boy over 50 feet in this field and will look to see if he can challenge Harrison.
