Way Beyond a Streak: NCISAA 3A State Meet Recap

Girls NCISAA 3A State Meet Recap

To be honest, it's getting hard to find new words to describe what Anna Cockrell has done over the course of this season, let alone to describe her whole career.  The NCISAA has always had superstars that could compete with, and beat, any athlete in the public schools.  But there has NEVER been an athlete like Anna Cockrell in North Carolina, at ANY school, and it's may be a long time before we see another who can rewrite the record books the way she has.

Her biggest race of the day was the 300 Hurdles, as it usually is.  That's where Cockrell took another big step forward, dropping an astounding 0.65 seconds from her previous PR to run 40.42.  That's US #1 this season, it crushes her NC All-Time State Record, and moves her up to 6th fastest in US high school history!  She also won the 100 Dash in 11.63 NC #4 US #8, equaling her season best; the 200 Dash in 23.66 NC #2 US #13; and the 100 Hurdles in 13.52, just 0.08 off her PR.  Words cannot describe the level Cockrell has reached, not just in her classification or in North Carolina but now nationally!

While Anna was dominating the sprints and hurdles, the distance races were the exact opposite: no individual could get even two wins.  Sarah Bodmer (Cary Academy) came the closest, taking the 3200 in 11:21.23 on Friday night and then narrowly losing to teammate Olivia Frazier in the 1600, 5:09 - 5:10.  Jena Metwalli (Cannon School) took the 800 in 2:17.56, holding off the 2:19 of Ella Dunn (Charlotte Country Day).  Watch out for Dunn next year; the junior also finished 2nd in the 400 to Gracie Whelan (Providence Day), who won in 56.69.

Charlotte Latin won the 4x100 and the 4x200, the only team in the meet to to take two relays.  Providence Day claimed the 4x200, and Cary Academy took the 4x800. Charlette Wade (Ravenscroft School) won the long jump with a mark of 17' 9.5", the only MileSplit Elite standard to come from a field event competition that saw no double winners.
