Saturday Highlights - Articles from ColoradoRunners.com - 5A / 4A / 3A / 2A

Friday Highlights - So many great results were posted Friday at the Colorado State T&F Championships. Mason Finley (Jr., Buena Vista, CO) continued his impressive outdoor season by winning the 3A boys shot put in 64-09.25. Finley competes in the discus Saturday. Along with Finley's top field event mark came Elizabeth Stover's (Sr., Longmont, CO) third consecutive state pole vault victory in the 4A girls event. Stover just missed her PR of 13-04, while clearing 13-03, winning by a large margin.

In other 2A/3A action, Sam Berggren (Fr., Middle Park, CO) showed once again why she is one of the most versatile freshmen in the country, winning the 3A girls 800m dash in 2:12.70 and leading all qualifiers in the 200m dash with a 25.23 and 400m dash of 55.94. Shaylee Robinette (Crowley County, CO) impressed as well in the girls 2A sprints, leading the charge with a 12.45 100m dash, 25.50 200m dash and 57.85 400m dash. Margaret Weingart (Peak to Peak, CO) ran the fastest 3A girls mark in the 300m hurdles with a 43.96 effort, qualifying to Saturday's final.

In 5A finals, Roman Holmes (Cherry Creek, CO) easily won the boys long jump with a sensational mark of 24-04.75, coming back Saturday to test his skill in the triple jump. Dey Tauch (Thornton, CO) ran agressive in the boys 800m dash and posted the top time in the state this season, winning the 5A title in 1:52.42. Meanwhile in the distance events, Foot Locker finalists Evan Appel (Dakota Ridge, CO) and Bobby Nicolls (Regis, CO) placed 1-2 in the 5A boys 3200m, with Appel edging out Nicolls by a 9:17.84-9:24.81 margin.

The sprints in the 4A/5A sections had some highlight performances as well. Reger Craigo (Arapahoe, CO) ran the fastest prelim time in the 5A 100m dash with a 10.54 effort, while also having the second fastest time in the 200m prelims at 21.38. Craigo sits behind Dominick Roberts (Denver East, CO), who ran 21.36 in the 200m prelims and 48.64 in the 400m prelims. On the girls side, Emily Blok (Conifer, CO) ran the fastest times in the 4A girls sprint prelims with her 11.79 100m dash time and 24.13 200m dash effort. Brianna Patton (Eaglecrest, CO) impressed as well by putting up the top 4A girls 100m hurdle seed of 14.31.

Further final results came in the 4A girls triple jump and 3200m run. Allie McLaughlin (Air Academy, CO) trounced a strong field in the girls 3200m run, being the only runner under eleven minutes by finishing in 10:49.46. Ashley Fanelli (Arvada, CO) had a championship day as well by winning the triple jump in 38-06.75.

5A Preview - Last year, George Washington swept the 5A track titles, putting 19 points on second in the girls' field and 33 points on second in the boys' field. This year the gap has closed considerably.

Although GW is well-represented again this year in the girls' field, the state meet looms near with no clear favorite in sight. Outstanding individuals in the field represent many different teams, but no team seems to quite have the critical mass on outstanding individuals that would make them a clear favorite. Click Here for rest of preview.

4A Preview - Everything about the 4A boys' state track meet points to a colossal showdown between four teams--Sierra, Longmont, Mullen, and Cherokee Trail.

Each of the four teams has a powerful presence on the track and a spotty presence in field events. All four teams have solid relays, with Sierra probably having the strongest set of relays. All four teams are a threat to win at least one or two events. Click Here for rest of preview.

3A Preview - Taking a look at the heat sheets available on the CHSAA web site, one thing is abundantly clear: the wind on the Front Range on Saturday wreaked havoc with the seedings. To a large extent, this is true in every classification, but expect several of Saturday's finalists to have advanced from lanes and seeds that don't normally advance to finals. Click Here for rest of preview.

2A Preview - The more things change, the more they stay the same. That's why you see Lyons, Akron, Sangre de Cristo, Rocky Ford, and Limon on the list of contenders for a state championship (boys and/or girls) in 2A once again this year. Click Here for rest of preview.

Illinois Girls State T&F Championships (IL)

Illinois Girls State T&F Champs: Meet Page / Live Results

Saturday Highlights - While 15 seperate state meets took place this past weekend, perhaps the deepest and most talented of them all was the Illinois Girls State T&F Championships. While great highlights came from Friday's prelims, including incredible throws from Bailey Wagner (Sr., Grant, IL) and Daniella Bunch (Jr., Mahomet-Seymour, IL), Saturday brought even better results.

Two athletes in particular stood out Saturday. Ronecia Nash (Sr., East St. Louis, IL) and Ashley Verplank (Sr., Bloomington, IL) capped their final prep seasons with multiple wins. Nash won an impressive quartet of races, taking the top prize in the 100m and 200m dashes, 100m hurdles and anchored her team to a new state record in the 4x100m relay. Nash won the 100m dash in 11.88, 200m dash in 23.86 and the 100m hurdles in 14.16. Her squad's 4x100m relay time of 46.23 ranks East St. Louis Sr. (IL) in the U.S. top ten of the event.

Meanwhile, Verplank won a tough double by taking home the gold in the 800m dash and 1600m run. Verplank blitzed the field in the 800m dash, winning with one of the top marks in state history with her 2:07.96 effort, also ranking her U.S. #3 in the event. In the 1600m race, Verplank used a strong second half of the race to easily beat the field with a winning mark of 4:54.99. Verplank's distance performances helped mark an excellent day for Illinois girls distance runners, which saw Kristin Sutherland (Sr., Sandburg, IL) win the 3200m run in 10:31.34, while leading seven other girls under eleven minutes, and Stephanie Brown (Jr., Tri-Valley, IL) won the smaller class A 800m title in a class record time of 2:10.96.

While East St. Louis and Nash made waves towards a state title, last year's state champion Barrington (IL) set a new state meet record in the 4x800m relay. The squad ran 9:03 last weekend at their sectional, coming back this time to win in 9:04.14. League rival Conant (IL) placed second in the 4x100m relay with a great mark of 46.47, while also winning the 4x200m relay in 1:38.96, both good enough for U.S. top fifteen rankings.

In other action, Leah Orley (Sr., Benton, IL) guided her class A squad to the team title with big performances in the triple jump, 100m and 300m hurdles. Orley's triple jump performance was perhaps her best of the weekend, leaping to victory in 39-01.25. Elsewhere, Natalie Tarter (Jr., Batavia, IL) started her state meet legacy, by winning the 300m hurdles in a U.S. top ten mark of 42.14, while placing second in the 100m hurdles to Nash in 14.32. Tarter also guided her team to a top five finish in the 4x400m relay.

Friday Highlights - Some great results were posted during the prelim day at the Illinois Girls State T&F Championships Friday. The top highlights came in the field events, led by nationally-ranked throwers Bailey Wagner (Sr., Grant, IL) and Daniella Bunch (Jr., Mahomet-Seymour, IL). Wagner had the top double performance on the day, throwing the top discus mark of the day in 157-08 and having the second best shot put mark heading into the finals with a 48-11.50 effort. Wagner's discus mark moves her up to U.S. #5.

Meanwhile, Bunch topped the shot put field and heads into Saturday's finals with a great mark of 49-01.50. Also, Alex Harden (Fr., Springfield Southeastern, IL) lept the top mark in the girls long jump with a jump of 19-02.25. Harden's mark ranks her in the U.S. top 25. The top track performance came in the girls 4x400m relay with Batavia (IL) cruising through their heat in 3:51.50, the top time in the state this season.

Meet Preview - What a weekend it will be in Charleston, Illinois. The deep and talented female track and field talent will converge on the track at Eastern Illinois University to show just who is the best. The top draw of the weekend actually takes place off the track and in the infield, where shot put throwers Daniella Bunch (Jr., Mahomet-Seymour, IL) and Bailey Wagner (Sr., Grant, IL) go head-to-head. Currently these two are ranked first (Bunch) and fifth (Wagner) in the country. With Bunch already going over the fifty foot barrier, and Wagner less than a foot away, this match-up could be one of the all-time greats in Illinois history.

Along with the shot put dual, East St. Louis (Sr.) senior Ronecia Nash looks to create a little history of her own by winning all four events she's entered in. The defending state 100m and 200m champion looks to repeat in both events, while winning the 100m hurdles and a sprint relay as well. Her squad has a fantastic shot at winning yet another state championship, but defending state champion Barrington (IL) certainly won't go down without a fight. Barrington is loaded in the relays, including their 9:03 4x800m relay from last weekend that is currently ranked U.S. #3.

Others to watch are Toni Graham (Sr., Conant, IL) and Natalie Tarter (Jr., Lockport, IL) in the sprints, Ashley Verplank (Sr., Bloomington, IL) and Stephanie Brown (Jr., Tri-Valley, IL) in the distance events and Shakeia Pinnick (Jr., Waubonsie Valley, IL) in a multitude of events. This 2008 edition of the Illinois Girls State T&F Championships should be one of the best ever as every event is stacked with talent.
