Two-Time State Champion Brandon Cachon Selects North Carolina

Two-time state champion Brandon Cachon of Barron Collier will trade in his royal blue and white uniform for the baby blue and white of the University of North Carolina. Cachon talks about his decision to become a Tar Heel.

What was the recruiting process like for you?

Exciting. My parents and coach helped a lot. I never turned a school down. I took every school under consideration.

Was there a meet or moment that your recruitment really took off?

After I went 47.01 at the great southwest meet in New Mexico

Where all did you visit/consider?

I visited Georgia, Mississippi state, Iowa, North Carolina, and South Carolina

What were the highlights of your visits?

Getting to meet and know all the college athletes and coaches. Also all the food they give you. I loved that.

The food. Always good. What was your favorite thing you ate?

The steak from Iowa.

The steak didn't sway you. You ultimately chose the University of North Carolina. What was it about the Tar Heels that made them right fit?

It felt like home. I had a great relationship with the coaches and the team. I'm looking forward to being on a great team that is a great family on and off the track. Just being there I can tell they are a great family and that was huge for me in my recruiting process.

You've won two state titles in your high school career so far. The first was in the 300m hurdles yours sophomore year. Then as a junior you won gold in the 400m dash. Recently, you received your 2015 state ring in front of the student body. How cool was that?

It was amazing. It feels like so much I have worked for paid off. Nothing compares to winning states.

At the college level is the plan to focus on sprinting or hurdles? Which do you prefer?

I'm going to hurdle in college. I love the 400m and hurdles. So I'm going to do the 400m hurdles in college also the 4x400m relay. and whatever else coach puts me in.

I know you mentioned you wanted to have this decision done in the early signing period. How important was that to you?

Very important because I think it's a good idea to get it all done now and then focus on season. I want to run in the 20 second range in the 200, 45 in the 400, and in the 36 second range in the 300m hurdlers.

What can people expect to see this year from Brandon Cachon in your last track season and down the road as a Tar Heel?

They can expect to see big things.
