Girls 4A West Region
Teams to Watch
This has always been one of the tougher regions in 4A for advancing to the state meet. Last year Hough missed out despite ranking as a top 10 team in the state. Providence returns as strong group as does Ardrey Kell. Myers Park has an outstanding 1-4, but are missing a strong 5th runner they'll need if they want to defend their title. Ardrey Kell is still a young team, led by a strong top 2 runners, but are lacking the 4/5. Providence has 5 girls in the top 20 in our virtual meet, which makes them the team to beat. They'll be hungry to reclaim the team title after narrowly losing by 2 points last year. Lake Norman's ranking here might represent what could have been, as they have lost at least 2 top-7 runners (and maybe 3) to transfers this summer - one of which could benefit another team in the region, Hough, and make them a dark horse candidate for the top 5. Of course, you can never discount a program like T.C. Roberson and their tradition of success! All told, this region may have lost a lot of it's state-level firepower, but it still looks to be intensely competitive within.
Athletes to Watch
Kiley Aymor (Ardrey Kell) emerged as a star runner along with teammate Josie Jordan last fall. The two like to close hard over the later stages of the race so don't expect them to lead from the gun. Holly Bailey (Lake Norman) battled injury during the end of cross last year, but started the season out great. If she stays healthy she will for sure be at the front of the lead pack. Kayla Glova and Lindsey Lanier (Providence) will hope to continue trend Grace Sullivan has set the last two seasons and bring an individual title back to Providence. Two girls that ran in the 4A West last year made big strides during track season: Melissa Zammitti is no longer in the region after transferring, but Paige McKinney (Hough) led the 4A West in the 3200 during the spring, and that could signal that she's ready to challenge the top 5.
