Which Conference is the Best? Conference Rankings Weekend!

Time to make sense of all the action from Conference Meet week, and start looking ahead to regional and state meets.

Since North Carolina's regular season is officially over as of yesterday, and we all have to wait 7 more days for the regional meets, this is a perfect weekend to full up with some custom rankings!  We added results from 50 conference meets to the database this past week, with all of them carrying championship intensity (although the rain early in the week may have slowed down some of the performances).  So, now it's time to rank all the conferences in the state, first by separate classifications and then all together.  Check out the process below, and look for each set of rankings to come out over the next two days!

Conference Rankings Methodology

  • Each conference is rated according to how its top 3 teams rank in the classification.

  • Times from the entire season are considered, not just conference meet results.

  • The scoring is just like a cross country meet: the top team in the classification gets 1 point for its conference, the second team gets 2, and so on.

  • Girls and boys teams are rated separately for each conference, then the points are added together to get the overall conference ranking.

  • At the end of the process, the conferences that stand to place the most teams in their respective state meets will be ranked together in an All-Classes Conference Rankings article.

  • In other words, each conference is ranked based on its strength within its own classification (since no 1A conference could actually defeat a 4A conference)
