Solid showing by Danbury at Great American

Danbury High, ranked No. 2 statewide, had a strong finish on Saturday at the prestigious Great American X-C Festival in Cary, N.C.

Competing in the featured Race of Champions event, the Hatters placed sixth overall among the 21 schools with 224 points. La Salle Academy of R.I. earned the team crown by defeating runner-up Marietta, Ga., 132-140.

Senior Ryan Ansel finished as the top runner for Danbury, placing 30th overalll with a personal best of 15 minutes, 55.79 seconds. He was followed across the line by junior Jack Adamski, who was 48th in 16:11.73. Rounding out the scoring for the Hatters was senior Cory Mullins (57th, 16:16.53), senior Ryan Fox (58th, 16:17.21) and senior Eric Waterman (65th, 16:20.44).

Danbury did go home with a victory in the meet. In the Invitational Blue race, the Hatters edged Mill Creek, Ga., 97-98. Senior Julio Arrendondo finished second overall in 16:27.63. He was just .41 behind individual winner, Simon Powhida of Bethlehem Central, N.Y., who was timed in 16:27.22. Bradley Fox, a sophomore, was 19th overall in 17:11.73.
